Terms Of Alliance

Aanya didn’t go straight home. Instead, she paid a quick visit to a small security firm that owed her father too many favors to question anything she asked. Fifteen minutes later, a file was sent directly to an encrypted inbox. The subject line was blank. The contents weren’t. Inside was a photograph. The man from the café, taken from a better angle than his own camera ever caught her. A note beneath in sharp, clean type: "Next time, send someone better. Or don't bother at all." It would land in Sebastian’s inbox by morning. No name. No signature. But a message all the same. --- Outside the café, minutes after she exits She turned the corner, pulling her coat tighter, the chill creeping in as the sun began to fall behind the buildings. She didn’t hear the footsteps behind her until someone spoke. “You don’t look like the type who scares easy.” Aanya paused, her hand tightening around her phone, already calculating how hard she’d have to hit him if he tried anything. But the man stepped into view—tall, sharp cheekbones, a loose grey scarf around his neck and the kind of amused smile that people wore when they knew too much. “And you don’t look like someone who should be walking around alone after embarrassing a Fugerson operative,” he added. Her spine stiffened. “Who are you?” “Let’s just say I’m a fan of chaos. And today, you made my day.” She didn’t relax, but her curiosity flickered. “Name?” He gave her a short bow. “ Noel Miller Unfortunately charming. Mildly useful. Occasionally a nuisance.” “Who do you work for?” He grinned. “Myself, mostly. But today…? Let’s say I’m freelance.” “Why are you talking to me?” “Because you just declared war on one of the most dangerous men in this city, and that kind of bravery deserves at least a coffee.” He tilted his head. “Or a warning.” Aanya narrowed her eyes. “Is this the part where you threaten me?” He gave her a wink. “No, darling. This is the part where I ask if you’d like a new ally.” --- Aanya sat on the edge of the rooftop, legs crossed neatly, eyes scanning the skyline like it owed her answers. Noel leaned against a rusted vent pipe, one foot propped, his fingers flipping a silver coin. "You didn’t answer my question earlier," he said casually. She didn’t look at him. “I don’t drink coffee with men I don’t trust.” “And yet, here you are.” “I’m here because you might be useful. Don’t confuse that with trust.” He grinned. “You wound me.” She turned to him now, sharp as glass. “You knew about Sebastian. That means you’ve been following more than just headlines.” “I follow tension,” Noel said simply. “Where there’s smoke, there’s usually someone rich enough to try hiding the fire.” She tilted her head. “And what do you want in return?” He caught the coin mid-air. “A seat at the table.” Aanya's laugh was soft, almost condescending. “There is no table yet.” “Then let’s build one,” he said. “I bring intel, contacts, and the kind of skills that don’t show up on your father’s polished boardroom charts.” “And I bring…?” she asked, watching him closely. He didn’t hesitate. “Legacy. Leverage. And the only name that still scares the old guard.” She went quiet for a moment, weighing him. Testing for cracks. "Fine," she said at last. “Let’s pretend you’re not just another grifter looking to get close.” “Oh, I am trying to get close,” he said, teeth flashing. “But not for the reasons you think.” Aanya stood. “Good. Because anyone who underestimates me ends up irrelevant—or bleeding.” Noel rose too, offering a mock bow. “Then here’s to relevance and staying upright.” As she turned to leave, he added, “One more thing.” She stopped. “When you’re ready to strike… I want to be there when you make your father regret everything.” She didn’t respond. But her silence, razor-sharp and simmering, said enough. ******** A sleek private office inside a marble-clad penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the city, but the curtains are drawn. A heavy, mahogany desk separates Eliza, Aanya’s poised and poisonous stepmother, from her smug, designer-suited son, Jeffrey. Eliza swirled her glass of red wine slowly, the blood-dark liquid catching the dim light like a warning. “Your father’s sentimentality is our biggest obstacle.” Jeffrey scoffed. “Sentimentality? Or guilt?” She smiled coldly. “Both are equally pathetic. But dangerous when left unchecked.” He leaned against the desk, confidence oozing like aftershave. “We need to act fast. He’s hesitating — again. One more heartfelt letter from her and we might lose the window.” “We won’t.” Eliza placed the glass down with a soft clink. “I spoke with his lawyer. The new will hasn’t been signed yet. Just drafted.” Jeffrey’s jaw tightened. “So what’s the hold-up?” “He’s thinking. And when a man starts thinking, he starts remembering.” Jeffrey grimaced. “About her mother.” Eliza’s smile thinned. “Exactly.” She stood, gliding over to a slim black folder on the side table. She handed it to him. Inside: confidential documents, a medical prescription under his father’s name, and a schedule of his upcoming hospital appointments. Jeffrey scanned the contents. “What’s this supposed to do?” “A reminder,” Eliza said smoothly, “that his time is not a luxury he can waste. And that his legacy needs clarity — before his mind becomes too fragile to sign anything.” He snapped the folder shut. “You want to pressure him.” “I want to guide him. While he’s still… compliant.” Jeffrey gave a dry laugh. “You’ve always had such a graceful way of saying manipulate.” She smiled, unfazed. “It’s why your future rests in my hands. If he doesn’t sign the new will by Friday, we go to Plan B.” Jeffrey raised a brow. “What’s Plan B?” Eliza poured herself another drink. “You’ll fake a scandal. Aanya’s name. Her reputation. Something public. Something dirty.” “She’ll fight back,” he warned. “I’m counting on it,” Eliza replied. “Because when she lashes out, he’ll see her as unfit. And then he’ll sign.” Jeffrey leaned back, eyes gleaming. “You’re a monster.” Eliza clinked her glass with his. “And you’re about to inherit an empire.” ---
