Chapter 8: Proof

819 Words
The air felt wrong. Too still. Too heavy. Like something inevitable had finally arrived. “Ethan.” His voice was calm. Too calm. But the way he said my son’s name— Slow. Measured. Intentional— Made something deep in my chest tighten. “Mommy?” Ethan turned to look at me. I forced my body to move. Step by step— Until I stood beside him. “Come here,” I said quietly. Ethan hesitated. Just for a second. And that second— Did not go unnoticed. His eyes flickered. Sharp. Observing. Calculating. So he saw it too. “Do you know him?” Ethan asked. My throat felt dry. “No.” The lie came out too quickly. Too clean. And he caught it immediately. Of course he did. He straightened slowly. Towering again. Dominating the space without effort. “You’re still lying,” he said. Not accusing. Not angry. Just… certain. “I don’t owe you the truth,” I replied coldly. A pause. Then— A faint smile. Dangerous. “No,” he said softly. “You don’t.” He took a step forward. “But he might.” My blood ran cold. “Don’t even think about it.” My voice dropped. Sharp. Warning. But he didn’t stop. He never stopped. Instead— He reached into his pocket. And pulled out his phone. A simple movement. But it changed everything. “I already did.” The screen turned toward me. A document. Clean. Official. DNA TEST AUTHORIZATION. My vision blurred for a split second. “You can’t do this.” Now— There was no calm left in my voice. “Oh, I can,” he replied evenly. “He’s a minor,” I snapped. “And you’re not listed anywhere as his guardian.” That should have been enough. That should have stopped him. But it didn’t. Because he was already three steps ahead. “Not yet,” he said. The words landed softly. But the meaning— Was devastating. I grabbed Ethan’s hand. Tight. “We’re leaving.” But before I could take another step— His voice came again. Low. Controlled. Final. “If you walk away now—” I stopped. “—I’ll file for legal investigation.” Silence. “You won’t.” But even I could hear it— The doubt in my own voice. “I will.” No hesitation. No bluff. “And when I do,” he continued calmly, “everything will come out.” My grip tightened around Ethan’s hand. “Your identity.” A step closer. “Your past.” Closer. “And him.” I couldn’t breathe. “You wouldn’t dare.” He looked straight at me. And for the first time— There was something raw in his eyes. “Try me.” Ethan shifted beside me. Uncomfortable. Confused. “Mommy… what’s going on?” I knelt down immediately. “It’s okay,” I said softly. Even though it wasn’t. Not even close. “Go play for a bit, okay?” He looked between us. Sensing something he couldn’t understand. But eventually— He nodded. And ran off. The moment he was gone— Everything changed. I stood up slowly. Facing him. No more pretending. “What do you want?” A simple question. But it carried three years of distance. Three years of silence. Three years of everything left unsaid. His answer came just as simply. “The truth.” A beat. “And if the truth is exactly what you think it is?” I asked quietly. He didn’t hesitate. “Then he comes with me.” The world tilted. “No.” Immediate. Instinctive. “He’s my son.” “And he might be mine,” he replied. Might. That word— Was the only thing holding everything together. For now. I laughed suddenly. Soft. Almost breathless. “You don’t even know how to be a father.” That— Finally— Hit something. His expression changed. Just slightly. “You’re right,” he said. Then— His voice dropped. Lower. Darker. “But I learn fast.” Silence stretched between us. Tight. Unforgiving. Then— He stepped back. “Three days.” I froze. “That’s how long you have,” he continued calmly. “To tell me the truth.” A pause. “Or I’ll take it myself.” That night— I couldn’t sleep. Ethan lay beside me. Peaceful. Unaware. My fingers brushed lightly through his hair. Three days. That was all I had left. Before everything I built— Came crashing down. Across the city— A file landed on a desk. “Sir,” the assistant said carefully, “everything you requested.” He didn’t look up. “Run the DNA test.” A pause. “With or without consent?” Silence. Then— His answer came. Cold. Absolute. “Do it.”
