Chapter 12: One Day

744 Words
The message came at exactly 9:00 a.m. Unknown Number: I’ll pick him up at 10. No greeting. No explanation. Just a statement. My fingers tightened around the phone. One day. That was what he wanted. A test. Or a demonstration. “Mommy?” Ethan looked up from the couch. “You look angry.” I forced my expression to soften. “I’m not angry.” Just… cornered. “Do you want to go out today?” I asked. He tilted his head. “With you?” I hesitated. Just for a second. “…With someone else too.” 10:02 a.m. The doorbell rang. Right on time. Of course. I opened the door. He stood there. Sharp suit. Controlled expression. Unshaken. But his eyes— Went straight past me. Looking for Ethan. “Come in,” I said coldly. He stepped inside. The air shifted instantly. Ethan peeked out from behind me. “…Hi,” he said softly. A pause. Then— “…Hi,” he replied. Not cold. Not distant. Just… unfamiliar. “I’m taking him out,” he said. Not asking. “I know,” I replied. “But I’m coming.” He looked at me. Long. Then nodded once. “Fine.” The car ride was silent. Ethan sat between us. Small. Quiet. Looking from one side— To the other. Trying to understand a world— That suddenly didn’t make sense anymore. “Where are we going?” he asked. “A place you’ll like,” he said. That didn’t help. The car stopped. Ethan’s eyes widened. “A zoo!” For the first time— He smiled. Bright. Unfiltered. And something inside me twisted. Because I hadn’t taken him anywhere like this. Not like this. Hours passed. Laughter. Footsteps. Small hands pressing against glass. “Look! Mommy! It’s so big!” I smiled. But it didn’t reach my eyes. Because every time Ethan laughed— He looked at him too. Sharing it. And he— Was watching. Not the animals. Ethan. Carefully. Quietly. Learning him. “Do you like it?” he asked. Ethan nodded quickly. “Yeah!” A pause. “…Can we come again?” Silence. Then— “…Of course.” That word lingered. Too natural. Too easy. Like he already assumed— There would be a next time. Later— We sat on a bench. Ethan between us again. Eating ice cream. Simple. Normal. Dangerous. “Mommy,” Ethan said suddenly. “Yes?” “…Can he come home with us?” Everything stopped. My chest tightened. Before I could answer— He spoke. “No.” We both turned. He looked at Ethan. Then at me. “Not yet.” That— Surprised me. “Why?” Ethan asked. A pause. Then— “Because some things need to be fixed first.” His gaze shifted to me. Heavy. Meaningful. The ride back felt shorter. Too short. Because I knew— What was coming. At the door— Ethan hugged him. Sudden. Unexpected. “Thank you,” he said. He froze. Just for a second. Then— Slowly— He placed a hand on Ethan’s head. “…You’re welcome.” I watched everything. Every movement. Every hesitation. And something inside me— Shifted. Because this— Wasn’t just control anymore. It was attachment. After Ethan went inside— We were alone. The distance between us— Felt smaller. “You planned this,” I said quietly. “Yes.” “At least you’re honest.” A faint smile. “I always was.” “That’s not true.” That landed. A pause. Then— His voice changed. Softer. Lower. “I read the file.” My heart stopped. So— He knew. “You shouldn’t have,” I said. “I had to.” Silence. “You almost collapsed,” he said quietly. “That has nothing to do with you.” “It does.” I looked up sharply. “It didn’t three years ago.” That— Hit. Hard. He didn’t deny it. Didn’t explain. “…I was wrong.” The words— Quiet. But real. I froze. Because that— I wasn’t expecting. “But that doesn’t change this,” he continued. His voice hardened again. “I’m not walking away.” Of course he wasn’t. “Neither am I.” We stood there. Two people— Refusing to lose. And somewhere between us— A child— Who belonged to both.
