The streets of Mexico were alive with the sounds of distant music and the faint hum of passing cars, but my mind was far from the festive atmosphere. As Liam drove us to the Grand Lux Hotel, a knot of dread tightened in my stomach. James’s cryptic call had left me restless, and now I was here, ready to face a man I thought I had left behind.
Liam glanced at me, his jaw set in frustration. “You don’t have to do this, Ava. Whatever he wants, it’s not worth it.”
I sighed, clutching my hands in my lap. “If it’s about Anthony, I can’t ignore it. You understand that, don’t you?”
His knuckles tightened on the steering wheel, but he didn’t respond.
The Grand Lux Hotel loomed before us, its towering structure glittering under the moonlight. My heart pounded as we entered the sleek lobby. The concierge directed us to Room 308 on the third floor, and with each step closer, my anxiety grew.
When we reached the door, Liam’s protective instincts flared. “I’m not leaving your side. Whatever he has to say, he can say it with me here.”
I hesitated but nodded. Having Liam with me felt like a shield against the ghosts of my past. I knocked on the door, and it swung open to reveal James.
He looked older, worn down by whatever life had thrown at him since our last encounter. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, and his eyes—once full of charm—were now shadowed with exhaustion and something that looked like regret.
“Ava,” he said softly, his gaze briefly flickering to Liam. “I need to talk to you. Alone.”
“Not happening,” Liam interjected, his tone firm.
James sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Liam, I respect your concern, but this is about Ava and Anthony. Please, just give us a few minutes.”
Liam’s jaw tightened, but I placed a hand on his arm. “It’s okay, Liam. I’ll be fine.”
Reluctantly, he stepped back. “I’ll be right here. If he tries anything, yell.”
I nodded and stepped into the room, the door clicking shut behind me.
James gestured for me to sit, but I stayed standing, crossing my arms. “What do you want, James? Why are you dragging me into this now?”
He leaned against the edge of the desk, his posture tense. “I wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t important. Ava, you and Anthony are in danger.”
I scoffed. “Danger? From what? Or should I say, from who?”
James exhaled, his eyes locking onto mine. “From the people I’ve been involved with. I got into some bad business after the divorce—things I shouldn’t have touched. Money laundering, shady deals… I thought I could handle it, but now it’s spiraling out of control.”
My stomach twisted, but I forced myself to stay calm. “And what does this have to do with me?”
“They know about you,” he said, his voice tight. “They’ve been watching you, Ava. They think you might be leverage against me, or worse, that you know something about my dealings. And Anthony… he’s not safe either.”
I froze, his words cutting through me like ice. The thought of anyone threatening my son ignited a protective fury within me. But I couldn’t let James see that.
“This is your mess,” I said coldly. “You dragged yourself into this, and now you expect me to trust you?”
“I don’t expect you to trust me,” he replied, his voice rising. “I just need you to listen. I’ve been trying to keep them off your trail, but it’s not enough. You need to be careful—watch who you talk to, where you go. Don’t trust anyone.”
My hands clenched into fists. “And what about you, James? Why should I believe anything you say? You’ve lied to me before. What makes this different?”
He stepped closer, desperation etched into his features. “Because I’ve got nothing left to lose, Ava. My life is already in pieces. The only thing I care about now is keeping you and Anthony safe.”
The sincerity in his voice rattled me, but I refused to let my guard down. “You expect me to uproot my life because of your mistakes? I’ve moved on, James. I’m not going to let you drag me back into your chaos.”
“Ava—”
“No!” I snapped, taking a step back. “I don’t believe you. I won’t let you manipulate me again.”
His shoulders slumped, defeat washing over him. “I just want to protect you, Ava. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
I turned toward the door, my heart pounding. “Stay away from me, James. Stay away from my son.”
I yanked the door open, finding Liam standing there, his expression dark. He didn’t say a word as I walked past him, but his protective presence was a comfort.
As we drove away from the hotel, the weight of James’s words pressed down on me. Part of me wanted to dismiss his warnings as another one of his manipulative ploys. But another part, a small, nagging voice in the back of my mind, whispered that he might be telling the truth.
I glanced at Anthony’s sleeping form in the backseat, his soft breaths a reminder of everything I had to protect. Whatever James’s intentions were, I couldn’t let fear dictate my life. I had come too far to let him pull me back into the shadows of my past.
But as the city lights blurred outside the car window, a chill settled over me. Something about James’s desperation felt too real to ignore.
And deep down, I knew this wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning.
