Chapter 2

My knee was pressed too close. The sound of fabric rubbing together was especially loud in the quiet car. My fingertips tingled, and I instinctively wanted to pull back. At that moment, it felt like my heart skipped a beat — and then started racing uncontrollably. Zaia kicked me in the mind: “What are you flinching for? Press in closer!” Alpha Lycan stared straight ahead, his side profile sharp and cold, as if he hadn’t noticed me at all. His breathing was so steady, he didn’t seem like a werewolf. “Can he not feel it?” I wondered. Zaia snorted. “You think an Alpha from Blackthorn is made of wood?” Just as she said that, Daphne suddenly leaned against Alpha Asher. “My head’s spinning,” she murmured, lips almost brushing his jaw. “Let me rest on you a bit.” Alpha Asher stiffened, but didn’t push her away or say anything. Zaia snapped: “Oh please. Keep pretending.” Daphne suddenly looked up and pecked a kiss on Asher’s cheek. “Mmm...” she bit her lip and smiled. “A reward for you.” Asher sharply turned his head, the tips of his ears flushing red. “Don’t fool around.” “What’s wrong?” Daphne blinked. “You didn’t like it?” “Kiara’s still in the back.” His voice lowered, tinged with discomfort. “She’s the one who…” Daphne cut him off, her fingers curling around his shirt button. “It’s not like I did anything inappropriate.” I let out a cold laugh. Daphne immediately looked over. “Kiara, are you upset? I’m sorry, but Asher and I have always been like this since we were kids.” “Since you were kids?” I raised a brow. “Since when did kissing someone else’s Alpha become part of childhood games?” “What are you saying?!” Asher glared at me. “Daphne only sees me as an older brother!” “Brother?” I laughed. “What kind of sister clings to her ‘brother’s’ shirt button like that?” “I didn’t!” Daphne’s eyes reddened. “I was just… just dizzy and couldn’t stand straight…” “Enough!” Asher shouted at me. “Can’t you stop picking on her?” At that moment, I didn’t even have the strength to argue anymore. Be generous? Fine. But I hope you can be just as “generous” in the future. Zaia screamed: “Rip those two dogs apart!” Asher’s face turned liver-purple, his eyes gleaming. “Why can’t you just be a little more understanding?” Daphne nestled into his chest and cast a triumphant glance at me. I took a deep breath and suddenly felt… tired of it all. Then I turned to Alpha Lycan — and my heart skipped a beat. At some point, he had turned his head and was staring at me. His eyes were deep, no longer the indifferent gaze from earlier. Before I could react, he leaned toward me. Our shoulders brushed. His warmth seeped through the fabric. I froze. Zaia shrieked: “Holy hell! He moved!” Alpha Lycan didn’t say anything. He simply lifted his hand and tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear. His fingertips grazed my ear — it tickled a little. “You…” My tongue stumbled over itself. He curled his lips slightly — such a subtle arc, yet dazzling. “Your hair was in your eyes.” I stared at Alpha Lycan’s jawline, my heart pounding like it was going to burst. This man… he was the most unique presence in the Blackthorn Pack. Everyone said he was cold as ice — in all of his twenty-five years, he’d never been seen with a single female. All the flirting from Omegas was frozen on the spot, and Betas who tried to get close were outright ignored. He was also one of the top healers in the entire werewolf realm. The last time I got grazed by a silver bullet because of Alpha Asher, it was him who treated my wound. He was surprisingly gentle when disinfecting — completely unlike his usual aloof demeanor. His clinic always smelled faintly of herbs, and there was a steady stream of werewolves coming in, from elders to pups. I’d heard he even knew ancient healing techniques. My mind buzzed. This man… Zaia chimed in: “He’s literally the prototype of every female wolf’s first crush — distant and untouchable.” I didn’t respond. Because… she was right. “We’ve never really had much interaction,” I thought. “The only times we crossed paths were when I had chest pain and ended up at the pack hospital… and he happened to be there.” Zaia snickered. “You were blushing all the way to your neck, remember?” Who could forget? “I was embarrassed at first, but he was so professional and calm, I quickly relaxed.” “And then you scolded yourself afterward — he’s a healer. What kind of body hasn’t he seen before?”
