Alyssa.
The next day, Alyssa woke up feeling really sore in some areas but she felt a lot better than she did the day before, all thanks to her mum who kept her word and made sure that Alyssa got a good massage before bed.
She stretched her body gently as she closed her eyes and thought of her night, it had been short but not so short that she did not remember her dream.
She had been dreaming about the confrontation she had with those girls and how Marcel had come in and saved her.
She did not want to have to deal with the whole drama that was going on but it seemed like that was inevitable;
She shook her head to clear the cobwebs; then she got out of bed.
As she got ready for school, she couldn't help but think about Marcel and his “Proposal” as Devin called it.
She knew she should stay away from him, he was just too much for her but she couldn't help but be drawn to him.
He was everything anyone could ever want; there was even a time when she would think about her dream boyfriend and currently, he seemed to have everything she ever wanted in that guy: handsome, popular, and kind.
As she dressed up, she heard the sound of a car pulling up and heard her phone ring. Before she even picked up the phone, she knew it was Dev.
“Hi, you’re really early today.”
Alyssa said into her phone as she picked up her back pack and walked to the door.
“You know I would do anything for you.”
“I know.”
Alyssa said smiling before ending the call and walking down to the living room area where she saw her mother and Devin having a conversation in hushed tones.
“What are you guys talking about?”
Alyssa asked,
“Nothing.”
“Nothing that you should care about.”
They both replied in unison. She looked from one person to the other and shrugged.
Suspicious, but then she did not think too much about it.
“Good morning, mom.”
“Good morning, Lys. How are you feeling today?”
Her mother asked turning her attention to her.
“I’m doing great.” Alyssa said as her mum walked to her and hugged her gently, “thanks for the massage last night, it helped.”
“You’re welcome baby, your dad had to leave early today. He wanted to come and get you from school today. Is that okay?”
“What’s that about?”
Alyssa asked chuckling as she walked straight to the kitchen to get some bananas and an apple.
“He’s just being extra after what happened.”
“I’m okay. I have Dev to chauffeur me around.”
“And that’s true. Dev, the chauffeur at your service.” Dev said getting up from the couch when she noticed Alyssa walking to the door.
“Okay then, I’ll tell him you said not to bother.”
“Yes, please. I’ll see both of you after school mum.”
“Okay, baby. Take care of yourselves okay?”
“Okay, Mrs. Stone.”
“Love you mum.”
With that, they walked out of the house and were on their way to school.
True to her word, Devin brought two canes for her to use. She would normally just laugh it away but she decided to use it.
She chose the silver one with a wolf head totem.
“Nice, looks like it was made for you.”
Devin said.
When she got to school, she saw Marcel right away. He was sitting in the cafeteria with a group of popular kids, Reese was there and she could feel her eyes on her.
Alyssa took a deep breath and walked on, hoping that he would not reach out.
And thankfully he did not.
“Do you want me to give her a taste of her own medicine?”
Devin asked as they walked past them.
Alyssa shook her head,
“It’s not necessary.”
The rest of the day went by so fast and Alyssa loved it, she had been able to go through the day without having any contact with Marcel.
She had Devin’s keys so she walked to her car to just wait for her while she finished her martial arts class.
Or she might have spoken too soon.
“Alyssa!”
She turned around to see none other than Marcel, walking to her with a very kind smile on his face.
“Hey,”
“You look better,” he said when he got to her.
“I feel better.”
“That’s great to hear.” Then he nodded his head towards her cane, “nice cane.”
Alyssa chuckled,
“Thank you, Dev thought it was the ultimate support and defense item and I cannot lie it had been very supportive.”
Marcel chuckled,
“What about the defense part?”
“I have not tested that out and I hope I do not have to.”
“I’m here, you won’t have to.”
Marcel said, his eyes intense. The mood intense.
Alyssa felt it and after a few seconds she cleared her throat and said,
“I should get to Devin’s car now.”
“Ohh,”Marcel said sounding apologetic, “I’m so sorry, I kept you standing.”
“Nah, it’s fine.”
“So aren’t you waiting for Devin?”
“No, I’ll wait for her in the car. She has a class.”
“You won’t mind me going with you, would you?” Marcel started
Just before Alyssa could say anything he quickly added,
“Just till, Devin comes out of her class. I won’t be comfortable leaving you alone.”
Alyssa did not see any harm in it even though at that moment, she wished Devin would just appear.
“Sure.”
And almost like clock work, her phone rang, it was Devin.
“Devin.”
Alyssa said to Marcel as she lifted her phone, after she said that she hoped she had not sounded too happy.
Devin had called to know where she was, she was out of her class.
Alyssa told Devin to meet her at the car. Marcel still walked her to the car but before he left he asked,
"I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime," Marcel said.
Alyssa hesitated. She wanted to say yes, but she knew she shouldn't. "I'm not sure," she said. "I'm pretty busy and…"
"No problem," Marcel said. "I understand."
Alyssa turned to get into the car, but Marcel stopped her. "Wait," he said. "Can I at least have your number?"
Alyssa reluctantly gave him her number. "I'll call you," Marcel said.
Alyssa nodded and watched him walk away. She knew she was going to regret giving him her number, but she couldn't help herself. She was drawn to him.
“Marcel can not spend a day without seeing or talking to you now?”
Alyssa heard Devin say as she opened the car door and threw her back pack onto the back seat not long after Marcel had just left.
“Stop with your nonsense.”
“You, should stop with your nonsense, acting like you don’t like him.”
Alyssa chose to ignore that sentence, she was not sure about how she felt for him but she was sure that she was drawn to him.
It was too chaotic and she was in no mood to process that.
Once Devin settled into the car, she closed the door and looked at Alyssa with a wide grin and asked,
“So did you use the cane today?”
“I did not.”
“Thank goodness, the whole time I was in that class, I was thinking of you.”
“Why?”
“Why?” Devin asked turning to look at me in the seat, “Reese got girls to beat you up, that means she can and will do anything.”
Alyssa was quiet for a short moment. Then she said,
“When I get better, I’m joining your martial arts class.”
“Well you better. Because you have just two options;”
“What are those?”
“To let Reese keep bullying you while you stay away from the boy you like or you defend yourself, and take a chance at something with the boy you like.”
Then she dramatically turned on the music in the car, turned to the steering wheel and started the car.
Alyssa did not talk the whole way, the music helped her think of what Devin had said.
She knew that it was the truth and she knew that she could not keep letting Reese bully her.
“So,” Devin said turning off the engine once they got to Alyssa’s house, “want me to come up with you? Or do you need to rest?”
It was the question that made her realize that she was actually feeling really exhausted.
“I suddenly feel exhausted, I think I’ll just rest. I’ll call you later though.”
She said picking her back and ensuring she was not leaving anything.
“Okay baby.”
She opened the door and kissed Devin bye before walking to the door.
“Make sure you call me. Okay?”
Devin yelled from her car once Alyssa opened the door.
“I won’t!”
Alyssa yelled back, only turning around to watch Devin drive out of her street.
Her mum was not home so she locked the front door, went to the kitchen where she took some water and warmed some leftover pasta for lunch.
After that she went to her room and slept through the afternoon.
She thought she heard her mother’s voice, then she woke up to the sound of her room door closing.
She yawned and stretched her body in bed, just a few seconds after, Alyssa's phone rang.
It was Marcel.
