The Nightmare.

“Now where are you going to young woman? You better come here and tell me your secret.”

Alyssa halted in her steps when she heard what her mother just said.

Her mind went to all the ways that her mother must have figured out her secret. Was that what that boy was going there?

Was he sent to catch her? So many questions filled her head but she could not answer any of them.

“My secret?!” She asked in a tiny voice as she feared that she had been caught.

“Yes, Lys. Your secret.” Mrs. Stone said as she walked a bit closer to her daughter and patted her cheek, then she continued saying,

“You and Devin spend so much time together I get jealous. We don’t even get to see you, Lys so tell us what can we do to see you? Hmmn?”

Alyssa could not help but let out a breath of relief after what her mother just told her. She almost told on herself because she thought her secret was out.

“Ohh! That!” She said chuckling nervously as she let her mother hold her hand and lead her into the kitchen.

“But I spend time with you guys. I literally live here.”

“Spending time and living under the same roof, do not mean the same thing, Lys. You know that.”

“I know that we have breakfast and dinner together, that must count as something right?”

Alyssa said as her mother served her dinner and gave her a look that said she could do better.

Alyssa picked up her plate and prepped into the dining area before looking back at her mum and asking,

“Where dad?”

“You know your dad, he’s out in the garage. Tinkering. We both waited for you so we could have dinner together.”

“I’m sorry, I did not realize so much time had passed. I will be a lot more conscious of the time next time I go to Devin’s.”

“You better, I don’t want you missing dinner again. Okay?”

“Yes mum.” She said grudging as she started walking to her room.

“Do you want me to come by later?”

“No, mum I’m good. Can you tell dad I said goodnight when he comes in?”

“Sure, I can.”

“Thank you. Good night, mama.”

“Good night, Lys.”

Once Alyssa got to her room, she dropped her plate of food on her bedside table then she went into the bathroom to wash her hands before coming back to eat.

While she ate, she texted Devin to let her know that she had gotten home safe. After she was done eating, she showered and got ready for bed.

She knew when her dad came back into the house and she smiled as she thought of her parents. They were always together and it was beautiful but it would have been a lot more beautiful if Hayden was still around.

She sighed and looked at the picture of her and Hayden on her bedside table then she kissed it before settling into her bed and thinking of her day and all the things that would have been.

Alyssa and her brother, Hayden held hands and swung them as they walked back home, singing their favorite song. It was during the winter and they had both gone out to the ice park to skate with some friends. They left the ice park once it started getting late because they had to go through the woods to get back home and everyone knew to not be out in the woods when it was dark.

This particular time, their Mum did not want to let them go without her or their dad but they insisted that they were going to be fine and they also promised to be back before it got dark.

So she gave them a very strict warning and told them to make sure that were back home before it even got dark.

They were still singing as they walked home and they were not so far from home when they heard a sound.

“Did you hear that ?”

Alyssa asked after gasping out loud. It was a really low sound so when her brother squeezed her hand and told her it might have just been in her head, she shrugged and they continued singing, walking back home.

But then she heard it again, the sound was still low but then it was louder than the first time. They both stopped singing and Alyssa looked up at her brother,

“Hayden?”

“Yes, Lys.”

“Did you hear that ‘cos I think I heard it again.”

Hayden then turned to look at her and slowly put his index finger on his lips, indicating that she should be as quiet as she could.

Alyssa who was clearly scared nodded really slowly and did as he said as they continued the walk back home, quietly.

Hayden then smiled at her, to ease the tension and remove the fear from the atmosphere, Alyssa smiled back at him and you could tell that she was feeling a little better.

Hayden turned his attention back to the road and they both continued walking, at a point he picked up little Alyssa and they just kept walking cautiously and as quickly as they possibly could.

Then they heard the growl again and this time Hayden stopped. Alyssa who was in his arms noticed the look of horror on his face and so she followed the direction of his gaze and when she saw what he saw, she also froze.

There just a stone’s throw away from them, was a something that they had never seen before. The first thing that one would think of when they see this would be, wolf! but it this thing was different.

It stood like a man and it was extremely big, a lot bigger than a man actually. Alyssa started shaking but Hayden held on to her before slowly and gently looking around.

The wolf looking creature stood there too, looking at them with a very terrifying look on his face. Hayden tightened the hug and he did it in such a way that Alyssa’s ears were close to his mouth then he whispered to Alyssa,

“When I tell you to run, you have to run as fast as your legs can carry you. Okay?”

When he said that she turned to look at him and asked,

“Will you run with me too?”

He smiled at her, kissed her head gently, then he nodded and said,

“Of course I will.”

Even though Alyssa was just right she knew there was something off about the way he replied her but she trusted him so she nodded. He then turned to look at the monster that was still standing before them.

It looked like it was smiling slightly, waiting to pounce.

Hayden gently placed her on the ground before holding her hand and tightening his hold on it then he smiled and whispered,

“I love you.”

After he said that there was a confused like in Alyssa’s face and you could tell that she was terrified. There was something wrong and she just knew it.

Then everything happened really fast, the wolf thing lunged at them and then Hayden jumped in front of Alyssa and he began to hold it off, simultaneously swinging the arm that held Alyssa to the side with so much force that she fell.

Then he yelled,

“Run!”

Alyssa froze as she watched the monster thing bare its teeth at her brother. When Hayden noticed that she was not moving he yelled again.

“Run, Alyssa! Run now! Go and get help!”

Alyssa shook her head like she had just been woken from a trance then she got up quickly and ran as fast as my tiny eight year old legs could carry her.

She just kept running and chanting,

“Get help! Get help!”

It was very cold but she just kept running, not stopping even when her coat was caught in twigs, Hayden had told her to run and that was what she was going to keep doing. Until she got help.

Once the house came into her line of vision, she you could tell that she felt some relief and that was when she started calling out for her mother.

“Mum! Mummy! Come out! Come out with daddy!”

She just kept yelling the same things until she got to the door and started banging on it.

Her mother dashed out of the house and her look of shock that was on her face at first turned to one of fear when she saw the state that her daughter was in and it got worse when she heard what her daughter was saying,

“We have to go now! Where is dad? Hayden is in danger! Mummy we have to leave now and save him!”

“Harry?!? Harry!! Come out here!”

Mrs Stone screamed as she ran to pick up her daughter but Alyssa did not want to be picked up, she just wanted them to go back.

Allyssa was extremely restless, they were wasting time, and that was not good.

“Tell daddy to come out with a gun! The wolf monster could kill him if we waste anymore time!”

Mrs. Stone’s eyes widened when she heard what Alyssa just said, she started shaking as she screamed out,

“Harry!”

Then her eyes glazed over and the next thing, Mr. Stone was out of the house as fast as the speed of light

He ran out with two stakes in his hand, he handed one over to his wife and without saying a word he ran into the forest, taking the same path that Alyssa had used to get home.

Mrs stone who was now alone with Alyssa turned to her and picked her up saying,

“Now, mama is going to run really fast with you so I want you to close your eyes and not open it, not until I tell you to okay?”

Alyssa nodded and closed her eyes doing just as her mother had told her.

It took shorter than it had taken Alyssa to get there but when Mrs. Stone got there she did not tell Alyssa to open her eyes.

“Ohh my baby,”

Was all she said and Alyssa knew, she just knew so she opened her eyes and what she saw next was something that she knew she was never going to forget.

Her father was hunched over her brothers mangled body. Alyssa screamed and struggled out of her mothers arms.

Her brother’s body was torn apart and there was so much blood around.

“No! Hayden No!”

She screamed as her mother grabbed her trying to stop her from going any closer to her brothers body.

He was dead and there was nothing she could do. He had kept me safe, but she had been unable to save him.

Alyssa woke up crying and sweating. Her mum rushed into the room, turning on the room light before running to her daughters side and holding her in her arms.

“Hey, hey, hey.”

She cooed softly as she moved back and forth, hugging Alyssa and trying to ease her.

“It was just a dream okay.”

Alyssa who was still crying nodded and hugged her tightly.

“I’m here with you and no one will harm you. I promise.”
