“Huh?”
Alyssa blurted out in surprise.
“Date me. Be my girlfriend.”
Alyssa looked at Marcel from head to toe and said,
“That is not even how I want to be asked out by anyone so thank you but no thanks.”
She turned away from him, faced the road ahead and continued saying,
“I would like to go home now if you do not have anything of importance to say to me.”
“Will you please listen to me?”
“I just did, that was not important or real and I do not appreciate being put in such a position.”
“Okay. I’m sorry about doing that.”
“Oh yeah? Thank you. Can we go home now? I really just want to lie on my bed for the next few hours.”
“I understand that.”
Marcel said before starting the car and driving them to Alyssa’s house. The ride was quiet and there was some awkwardness in the car.
Once they got to Alyssa’s place, Marcel parked the car and apologized to Alyssa,
“I really did not mean to sound insensitive, I just blurted out my thoughts. I am really sorry.”
Alyssa nodded and just before she opened the door, Marcel continued saying,
“I hope this does not affect our friendship.”
Friendship?
The look on Alyssa’s face did not give too much, she just shook her head and turned to him,
“Thank you so much for today.” She said, her voice quiet, “I’ll see you in school.”
Then she opened the door and the first step she took was uncertain, uncomfortable even. Just as she took her second step, Marcel got out of the car and was beside her, helping her take the next step.
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not. I did not want to assist you earlier but I can not watch you walk to that door in so much pain.”
Alyssa refused to move any further and whispered furiously,
“What do you think you are doing? My mum is going to see you helping me and she won’t stop asking questions.”
When Alyssa noticed that not even her tone or her refusal to walk was fazing Marcel, she sighed and looked into his eyes and said,
“Please?”
“No, we’ll come up with something once you’re in the house.”
Alyssa hissed and reluctantly moved, letting Marcel support her as she walked gingerly to the door.
Once she got to the door, it swung open. Alyssa’s mother was at the door, her face filled with worry.
“Lysss what’s wrong?” She said as she looked from her daughter to the handsome boy who was supporting her.
“Good day, ma’am, I’m Marcel, Alyssa’s friend from school.”
“From school?” She asked still looking from Alyssa to Marcel, the worry evident on her face.
Marcel nodded as Mrs. Stone gave them way so he could walk into the house and place Alyssa on the couch closest to the door.
From the look on her face, you could tell that she had so many questions but she focused on the most important.
“What happened to her?”
“Alyssa fell off her bike.”
Mrs. Stone turned her attention to Alyssa;
“I have told you to be careful with that bike,” then she went on to gently pat Alyssa, asking if she was alright.
“It wasn’t her fault. There was reckless truck driver and Alyssa was smart enough to jump off her bike and out of his way.”
Mrs. Stone gently hugged Alyssa who winced in pain.
“So sorry baby.” Then she turned to Marcel, “thank you so much…”
“Marcel, ma’am. My name is Marcel.”
“Thank you Marcel. I really appreciate it.”
Marcel nodded then he turned his attention to the now quiet Alyssa and said,
“See you in school.”
Alyssa nodded then Marcel smiled and walked to the door and out of it. Leaving Alyssa with her mother.
“Do you need your bruises checked, I noticed you were walking very uncomfortably.”
Alyssa shook her head,
“There’s no need for that, Marcel took me to a pharmacy. I just need to be in my bed.”
Alyssa stood up and her mother ran to her side,
“I can walk mama.”
“I know you can, I will still assist you though.”
Knowing that her mother would not budge, Alyssa let her do what she wanted to do, once they got to her room, Mrs. Stone assured the question Alyssa knew was coming.
“You have a friend other than Devin and you did not let me know?”
Alyssa closed her eyes in frustration, this was one of the main reasons why she did not want Marcel to walk her to the house. Her mother was going to make a fuss about everything.
“We just became friends.”
Mrs. Stone smiled at her daughter as she helped Alyssa get on her bed.
“If you insist.” She walked to the door and just before she walked out of it she stopped and said,
“I hope we see more of him.”
“Come on, moooom!”
Alyssa said in frustration
“Please rest okay? I’ll come check on you later.”
Mrs. Stone said chuckling before closing the door behind her and leaving Alyssa alone in her room.
*******
Alyssa did not even realize that she had slept off until she opened her eyes. Her body felt really sore and it took her a second to register what had happened to her.
She turned to her side gingerly and closed her eyes as she thought about the moment she got attacked.
It had been terrifying and she just kept thinking about what would have happened and how far those girls would have gone if Marcel had not shown up.
Marcel.
He had her so messed up and he did not even know how much. Since the day she saw him at the beach her life has never really been the same.
She smiled as she thought about the face that it was a lot less boring than it used to be but then if it involved threats and other violent acts, she was not interested.
Sighing, she got up to a sitting position on her bed and then picked up her phone to call her best friend and let her know what had just happened.
“Hello best friend.”
Devin said the moment she picked up,
“I’m about to tell you what happened to me today and you have to promise me that you will not say a word till I am done.”
“I promise.”
Devin replied quietly then Alyssa went on to tell her all that had happened to her after school that day when she was done she let Devin know and the first thing Devin did was scream,
“He proposed?!”
“I don’t think that is what he had in mind but yeah.”
Then Devin’s tone took a more serious tone when she said,
“I am personally going to deal with that bitch.”
“No, you won’t because she is not worth it. She could not even show her face, she sent those girls.”
“We have to do something about that, Lys. This time she went to far.”
“Well,” Alyssa started, “I was actually thinking of that.”
Then she let out a breath and said,
“I want to learn to defend myself so I would like to join your martial arts class.”
After telling Devin that, Devin yelled,
“Yesss! Urghhhh finally Alyssa. I promise you won’t regret this at all.”
“I’m sure I won’t.” Alyssa said chuckling. “Sorry, I won’t be coming to your place tonight.”
“What do you mean “sorry”. I should be the one coming over, you’re hurt Alyssa.”
“You don’t have to, at least not tonight. I’ll see you tomorrow maybe,”
“Do you have to go to school though? Aren’t you hurt?”
“I am sore. I told you Marcel took me…”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Marcel handled it didn’t he.”
Alyssa laughed at Devin’s tone.
“Yes, I guess he did.”
“I knew I made the right decision leaving you with him.”
“Not really, I got beat.”
“Yeah and that’s because you insisted on going home on your bicycle.”
“You know that even if they had not ambushed me today, they were still going to find a way.”
“Well, not if you let Marcel take you home every evening.”
“Why would I do that?”
“Because you should let that handsome boy treat you right. That’s why.”
Devin and Alyssa burst out laughing at that.
“I’ll come to your place and pick you up for school tomorrow.”
“Okay, Dev. I would love that.”
“Do you need any support?”
“Support?” Alyssa asked confused.
“Yeah, to walk and also to beat off the haters -like Reese- with. I have a few customized hand canes, if you want. Nice stuff.”
Alyssa chuckled at that, of course Devin has those.
“I think I’ll be fine without it.”
“Okay. I’ll come along with two, just incase.”
“Okay. Dev.”
“Please take care of yourself and be fine. I’ll see you tomorrow morning and we’ll talk better.”
“Bye.”
