The students gathered at the assembly for the announcement. Everyone was tense, but I was especially scared. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do if it was discovered that other than failing to return the lunastone, I was female.
It was the principal who came out to call the names of the students who won’t be staying back. My anxiety increased. Any other teacher could have easily handled this, so his presence unnerved me the more. Was he here to specially call me out?
The principal cleared his throat. “Ahem. If you hear your name on this list, that means you failed the tests and will no longer be a student of this school.”
I held my breath as he started to call out the names, waiting for my name to appear on the list.
Finally the long list slowed, and my name didn’t come.
