Chapter 12: The Mirror Mother

📖 Chapter 12: The Mirror Mother Part 1: The Woman I Buried The grove spoke. Not in words. In memories. As I crossed the stone ring around Liam, the trees bent toward me. Their mirrored bark rippled, forming not visions—but interrogations. I stood face to face with… myself. But not the version I knew. She was younger. Drenched in blood and sweat. Holding two infants—one alive, crying strong. The other, limp and quiet. “Why didn’t you scream louder?” she asked. “I did,” I whispered. “Not enough.” She stepped closer. Her eyes were wild with grief and guilt. “You chose the louder child. The stronger one. You let her fade.” “I didn’t know,” I cried. “They said she was gone.” “They lied. And you believed them.” Behind her, Lyra appeared. Not as a ghost. As a girl again. She stepped forward and whispered: “You forgot me first.” --- 📖 Chapter 12: The Mirror Mother Part 2: The Pact Axel burst into the grove’s center just as the mirrored sky cracked like lightning. His blade was drawn, but it shimmered—dulled by the magic here. He looked at me, breathless. “We have to go. Now.” “I can’t,” I said, eyes locked with Lyra’s. “She won’t let us.” Liam reached for me—but his hand stopped at the air, like there was glass between us. “She’s showing you the truth,” he said. “So you’ll give her what she wants.” “And what is that?” Axel growled. Lyra turned slowly. “Justice,” she said. Then from behind her, seven ghostly figures rose—elders from the Crescent Council. One was Marissa’s midwife. One was the doctor who signed the false death. Lyra’s hands glowed. “This is my pact,” she whispered. “If a soul is cast out before its time, the bloodline must pay.” She pointed at me. “You are the bloodline.” --- 📖 Chapter 12: The Mirror Mother Part 3: Through the Looking Heart The mirrors pulsed—each showing me moments I had buried. Not just Lyra. Everything. My anger at Marissa for being the “perfect” one. The moment I prayed for only one baby, because I was scared. The moment I looked away when the doctor said, “It’s better this way.” I collapsed. “I didn’t mean it!” I sobbed. Lyra didn’t move. “She needed your love. And you gave her fear.” The mirrored trees turned red. Blood ran down the trunks. A cradle appeared at my feet—empty. “If you want him back,” she said, pointing to Liam, “you must trade.” “Trade what?” Axel demanded. Lyra smiled. “Your reflection. Your soul. Your right to ever be seen again.” I stood, shaking. Because somehow… I knew she could do it. And worse… I deserved it. --- 📖 Chapter 12: The Mirror Mother Part 4: The Choice That Was Never One Liam cried. “Mom, please—don’t do this.” But I saw it in his eyes. He knew I had to. I walked toward Lyra. Her eyes softened—like the child she was meant to be. “I wanted to be held,” she whispered. “Just once.” I knelt. Arms open. “I’m sorry.” She stepped forward. Touched my face. The grove went still. And then—her body flickered, collapsing into light. The mirrors shattered. And I screamed. Because I hadn’t expected it to hurt that much. Pain bloomed through my chest—like my soul had cracked and poured out. When the light faded, I was still standing. Liam was free. Safe. But when he looked at me… His eyes filled with confusion. “Who are you?” he whispered. And I realized— Lyra had taken my reflection. I was now invisible to my own son. --- 🪞 Teaser – Chapter 13: A Mother Unseen The grove let them go—but not all of her. Aurora returns to the pack, hollow, unseen, and hunted by whispers of the grove that cling to her skin. As the Alpha Council learns of what happened, they mark Aurora as “unstable.” And worse… Liam starts dreaming in Lyra’s voice. Chapter 13: A Mother Unseen What do you do when your child doesn’t remember you— but remembers the ghost that took your place?
