Chapter SixteenAgnes decided to take the stairs to the ground floor, rather than the lift. She didn't feel like meeting Brian again at the moment; not if he was in the same dismal mood. She spotted Alan just as she rounded the last bend in the staircase. Though he was alone at that point, she knew Sergeant Andrews would still be around somewhere. “I guessed it wouldn't be long before you joined us,” he laughed. “I expect your sergeant told you that he'd seen me. So what has brought you here? Is something going on?” She raised her eyebrows. “Yes, Andrews mentioned he'd bumped into you. So, what have you been up to today?” he asked, avoiding her questions. “Quite a lot, actually,” she replied. “I have something we really need to discuss, but…” She didn't get the chance to say any more,
