Chapter 3 **The Rules **
---
Kian stood up from his bed. "We need to make some rules."
Tobi flitched. Kian didn’t even look at him.
"Rule number one," Kian said, his voice flat. "Don’t touch my things."
Tobi crossed his arms. "Rule number two. Don’t talk to me like I’m your houseboy."
Kian finally turned. Tall. Sharp jaw. Eyes that looked like he hadn’t slept in days. And annoyingly handsome.
"Rule number three," he said, ignoring Tobi completely. "No friends in the room after 10pm."
"Excuse me?" Tobi laughed. "This is MY room too."
"Was your room," Kian corrected. "Now it’s ours. And I’m not here to make friends."
Before Tobi could answer, the door burst open.
"Gentlemen!!!"
Both of them jumped.
Standing in the doorway was a guy with dyed blond hair, 3 earrings, and the loudest smile Kian had ever seen. (Derek is tobi friend)
"Hey, Tobi!" Derek grinned. "You got a roommate already and you didn’t tell me?"
Derek turned to Kian to introduce himself. "Hi! I’m Derek. RA for this floor," he sang. "Just here to do the roommate orientation!"
Kian groaned. Tobi stared.
Derek clapped his hands. "So! Rule number one of campus housing: Respect each other’s space. Rule two: No fighting. Rule three: If there’s a problem, come to me!"
He looked between them, eyes narrowing. "You two look like there’s already a problem."
"There isn’t," Kian said at the same time Tobi said, "There is."
Derek grinned. "Love the energy. Anyway, I’m right across the hall. If he steals your food, text me. If he plays music too loud, text me. If he’s cute, also text me." He winked at Tobi.
Kian’s ears went red. Tobi choked.
"W-what?"
"What?" Derek winked. "I’m observant. See you boys later! Try not to kill each other before midterms."
And just like that, he was gone.
Silence.
Tobi exhaled. "So. Rules."
Kian walked to his side of the room and pulled out a notebook. He started writing.
"What are you doing?"
"Making official rules," Kian said without looking up. "Since you clearly can’t follow basic ones."
Tobi walked over and peeked.
1. No touching my stuff
2. Lights out by 11
3. No loud music
4. No bringing people over
5. Stay on your side
Tobi snorted. "Number 5? The room is like 3 meters. What, should I draw a line?"
Kian looked up. "If I have to."
Something about the way he said it made Tobi’s stomach flip. He hated that.
"Fine," Tobi said. "My rules too then." He grabbed the pen.
6. No being rude 24/7
7. Share the fridge
8. If one of us has a guest, warn the other
9. No judging my playlists
10. ...don’t be a jerk
He shoved the notebook back. Their fingers brushed. Kian didn’t pull away immediately.
"These are stupid," Kian muttered. But he didn’t cross any of them out.
Tobi smiled to himself. "Guess we have a contract now, roommate."
Kian didn’t answer. He just put on a hoodie.
"Where are you going?" Tobi asked.
Kian answered, "My well-being doesn’t have anything to do with you."
"I just want to know if you wanted to buy food, so you can help me get some," Tobi said.
"Never. Nothing is wrong with my leg," Kian answered and left the room.
Tobi’s phone rang.
Tobi’s mom: "Hello, my baby. Hope you’re coping with your roommate?"
Tobi: "I’m managing, Mom."
Tobi’s mom: "Son, you know I tried my best to change your roommate. They told me it’s only for a year. Please manage."
Tobi: "Okay, Mom."
Tobi’s mom: "Will you come home this weekend?"
Tobi: "I don’t think so."
Tobi’s mom: "You know I miss you."
Tobi: "I know, Mom. Probably next weekend."
Tobi’s mom: "I’ll send you something, okay? Bye, baby. Take care. You know Mom loves you."
Tobi: "I know, Mom. Love you too."
Then he hung up.
