Despair

Third Person POV “Ring! Ring! Ring!” Ana’s phone blared from her bedside table. She was still in bed as the sun had yet to make it's appearance. Rubbing her eyes with one hand Ana rolled over to reach for the phone. Lazily she grabbed it from the night stand and with eyes still adjusting she made out the name on the screen. 'Carrie' was displayed. Seeing it was David’s sister calling her heart began to pound. She recalled his warning as his voice repeated in her head. 'If I don’t come home tonight, I will be dead by then. I cannot stay sober without you.' It could not have happened. Being his fated love she would have felt it. Her thumb nervously went to answer the call. “Hello, Carey? Is he okay?” Ana worriedly spoke into the phone as she threw a pair of sweat pants over her night shorts before rushing out the front door into the cold morning air. “Ana, you need to speak to my mom," David's sister replied, her voice dejected. His mother, Susan, began speaking calmly yet the pain was evident in her voice. Ana struggled to listen. “David drove off the road last night on his way to you. I saw him before he left. He was sober, fully awake. Honestly, he was perfectly capable of making the drive. The officer's are saying he was intoxicated, found him with it in his arm. He was coming home to you and Eva! We know he would not!" As David's mother spoke emotions took control and Ana began to sob. "He is at the hospital if you would like to see him.” Between breaths, Ana replied with hope, “Is he... alive? Could they bring him back?” Her words quickly became frantic. His mother understood more than most the extraordinary pain her angel daughter in law was experiencing. Sadly, she replied, “No, sweetie, he is not. His heart gave out. You must be strong for Eva. She needs you.” David's mother was born to an Angel mother and human father blessing her with some devine abilities similar to those Eva would experience in the future. His mother was a powerful empath, held psychic medium abilities and could detect the light or dark energy of any inhuman. Ana could not hear anymore. "I cannot! He cannot be!" Ana cried before realizing it was not just her and Eva whose hearts were breaking. "I am so sorry Susan. I blame myself. If we had not left or if I let him come home he would still be with us " Ana sobbed. "My mind is jumbled but I cannot apologize enough. I need to go," Ana finished, trying her best to put together some kind of sympathetic words but failing. "Ana, do not hang up. I know this is difficult but you need to listen. This is not your fault. I know everything and while some of your actions do not appear pure that is only because you were manipulated as was David. If he returned home this would have happened with Eva there. He was not in control. Carrie has offered to come get you," "No!" Ana nearly shouted. "Ana, listen. I experienced an urgent vision. You must not- ". Ana threw her phone across the yard where it connected with a tree destroying the device. Whatever her mother in law's vision, it did not matter. He was gone. She would not allow her last Earthly memory of David to be of him in that state. The thought of visiting the hospital morgue, witnessing her only love lying lifeless sent a sharp pain to her chest. At that moment both her heart and mind shattered. She hurried inside and wrapped 3-year-old Eva in a woolen blanket. Holding her tightly against her chest Ana rushed to the balcony, opening her wings for the first time since landing on Earth. A layer of black feathers lined the bottom of her previously pure white extensions. Head still spinning she launched into the air without a destination in mind. All the while Joe watched from the window with a proud smirk on his face.
