Chapter Thirty-Six The MPs had a problem. To go back the way they came meant moving through Canadian lines, and though the majority of the men were most certainly loyal, they had no way of telling who was friend and who was foe. For some reason, these three Irish Canadians seemed to be working with the Germans, and McGavin had supported the idea. The Englishman hinted that he might know what this was all about, but he could not explain anything until they heard from Fitzhugh. The others agreed that there was something very suspicious happening here and they needed to get help. The men decided to head back to HQ in a different direction, but stuck as they were at the far end of the trench system, it was proving near impossible to figure out how. ‘What lies behind us here?’ McGavin asked
