Joe Harper sat in the driver’s seat of the BMW with the engine running. It was now almost daylight, although the heavy, rain-filled, low cloud and squally sheets of, intermittantly, torrential rain gave the impression of dusk. Rob and Alan Brodie advanced down either side of the narrow, uneven track leading to the house. Both kept to the bushes, moving slowly and stealthily towards their target. Neither was particularly dressed for the adverse weather conditions and the combination of heavy falling rain and the already wet undergrowth which provided their cover, meant that both men were soaked to the skin as they approached the house.
