Chapter 8 LUCIEN'S POV. I drove past the busy streets, making my way steadily, and overtaking the other cars who were too slow for me. Traffic slowed me down a few times, and in those few times, I couldn't help thinking about Adria. Thinking about her made me feel sour, and on the verge of anger. How could she be so unwilling to listen and give me a chance? She had called me a monster and had that moment it had felt like something had clenched its hand around my chest. I hadn't intended for her to find out in such a way, and I understood that as a human, she had every right to be scared and doubtful but I believed I had done my best to convince her that I wasn't going to harm her. In that basketball court, there had definitely been a killer vampire there present, and she had probably thought he was me, and that was probably the reason she had been so scared, but I had searched for the vampire after I had knocked her out, and wasn't able to find him. That had been the first disappointment but I tried to forget about it and try harder the next time I saw one in sight, only for Adria to wake and hurl hurtful words at me making me feel even worse. The way she had looked at me had just been so stinging and burning at the same time. I had spent so much time the whole day, trying to understand why she wouldn't believe me and how to make her believe me but it had been fruitless. I shook my head and tried to concentrate on my destination. I had to visit Alberta, the old wolf who had stayed in the human world for a long time and who also never planned on leaving. I was baffled about the killer vampires whose scents I always failed to catch, and needed some real answers if I knew I wanted to catch them in time before they killed as many humans as they wanted, and drank as much blood as they desired. When I pulled up at the house in which she was staying, I took a deep breath, and tried to forget all about the disappointment I had received from Adria's part. I rang the doorbell at the fence once, and I heard her voice already, inviting me in. I pushed open the Fence and walked in, walking along the little path she had made in between her garden of all types of flowers which gave the place a relaxing feeling. When I stepped onto her front porch, she pulled open her door and gave a bright smile. “Lucien.” She called in a voice as smooth as silk, and I gave her one in return as I walked into her modest home with its cute little sofas, a flat screen and a beautiful mahogany table in the center with beautiful flowers which she had an abundance of. The walls were with gleaming white paint and there was a painting of a wolf sniffing a flower on a part of the wall. It made me smile because I could imagine she was the wolf who loved flowers. Everytime she came to visit our world back then, she always had something flowery with her, and also smelled of flowers. The floor was tiled with gray tiles and her dining room had a table for two people alone, and a window which overlooked the street behind which was busy with kids playing when they ought to be at school and people walking around as well as bicycles whooshing past. She finally came and dropped a plate of warm home-made cookies with a cup of milk. “So, to what do I owe this visit, Lucien? I believe you also have a place to be.” She asked in a friendly tone as she herself took a seat. “It's about the killer vampires. I have a question.” I spoke up, and she sat straighter. “Ask away.” “I feel they hide their scent whenever they see me around but I still cannot fathom how that is possible. I see them one minute, but I cannot smell them and in the next minute, they're gone.” I explained, and she looked thoughtful before she spoke up. “That can only mean one thing.” “What is that?” “That they have searched for and taken the Purus flower. It is a rare flower growing deep in the forest that allows the vampires to wash off their scent. However, it only lasts for five hours each time it is used.” She explained, and I was forced to drink the milk she had given me so I could gulp down what I had just heard. My mission just got a lot harder. ~ Throughout that day, I was down. Those Killer vampires were still out there. Killing and turning humans as they pleased, and I had just discovered it wasn't going to be easy to catch them. Alberta had been really encouraging, and had told me that it didn't matter if they hid their scents and that there would still be other ways to catch them, that I only needed time to think and work harder on it. Her words were what I held onto to make myself feel happier. I was going to find a way to get rid of them all and it would happen very soon. It was just all a matter of time, and as for Adria, I was going to find a way to prove myself to her. I was going to make things right. The next day, I drove to school feeling slightly better and ready to take on the events of the day. The female student greeted me with smiles, staring at me as I went past, and some even tried to flirt with me but I gave them no response in a courteous manner. On my way to my office, I saw the class governor with a pile of books walking by, and stopped him. “Good morning, Professor Lucien.” He greeted. “Good morning. When you get to class, tell Adria to bring the assignments to my office.” I told him, and he nodded immediately, happy to be relieved of some of his work. “I'll do that right away..” He assured me and I dismissed him. In my office, I pulled out the things I needed to do from a file on my desk and tried to occupy myself with it while I was waiting for Adria to show up. Ten minutes, twenty minutes, thirty minutes, and yet Adria hadn't shown up. I was beginning to get impatient. My eyes had even scanned my watch to be sure my time was correct and not that it was just me who couldn't wait too long, but my watch was correct. I decided to wait some more, deciding that she was probably just scared and was working up her courage because there was no way she could defy a command from her professor. I only hoped she wouldn't be too scared to listen to me. I needed her to hear me out. However, forty-five minutes passed and Adria was yet to bring the assignments into my office. Had she really defied the professor's order? Some nerve she had! Or could it simply be that the class governor had forgotten all about it due to all the things he had been doing at the time? I got up from my desk, prepared to find her and confront her but was stopped by a quick knock and subsequently, my door opened. It was Adria, and she came in with assignments in her arms. Even though things were a little too serious to think about something else, I could help but gush over her beauty. It was no wonder her face had kept on appearing in my mind all through the night. There was a slight frown on her face as though she wasn't pleased with dropping the books for me but it didn't in any way decrease her beauty. She had a defiant look on her face but when she dropped the assignments of everyone in the class, I caught her hands trembling. She was probably scared I was going to pounce on her or something. Adria turned to leave immediately she had dropped the assignments, but I quickly caught her arm, and felt her tense up. She couldn't leave like that, she hadn't heard me out. It was the main reason I had called her to my office. Adria stuck her free hand into her pocket immediately and brought out something, raising it in my direction till she was pointing it at me, with her nostrils flaring and eyes rounder and bigger. At first, I wondered what it was but then I got a faint whiff of it, and moved backwards. It was wolfsbane. "If you move even an inch closer to me, Professor, I promise I will shove it into your nose!"
