I MANAGED TO sleep through the night, despite the constant comings and goings in the ICU, most of which must have involved installing a new resident, because when I woke up, the bed next to me was once again occupied. What does etiquette require in such cases? Do I try to talk to this person if he or she is awake, or is anonymity the order of the day? Who cares? I don’t feel much like making small talk with a total stranger, anyhow. My musings were interrupted by the arrival of a nurse.
“Good morning,” she said cheerfully.
“Already?”
“My goodness, yes. It’s after six.”
“That late, huh?”
