980 Words

THIRTY-THREE “Where were you when I called?” Vivian said after they’d cleared the Caldecott Tunnel. They were in Freddie’s Jaguar, heading out to Walnut Creek on Highway 24. Freddie chuckled. “We were on a cable car. Barbara wanted to go to Fisherman’s Wharf.” “What’d you tell her?” “The truth. I had to go to work.” “You like her, don’t you?” Freddie smiled. “Yes, quite. Always have.” “How come you’re not together anymore?” Freddie glanced at Vivian and shook his head. “Not now, love, it’ll just make me lonely.” He paused. “Tell me about the call.” “I left my number in Joanna’s room before I left. He must’ve found it and now he knows who I am.” “What did he say?” “I told you what he said.” “Tell me again.” “He said I should forget what I saw unless I want to end up like her.”
