The Rain That Changed Everything

354 Words
Rain tapped softly against the windows of Sweet Scoops, blurring the outside world into streaks of silver and gold. Miss Alana Nugent wiped down the counter for the third time that evening, even though it was already spotless. Routine calmed her. Predictability made sense. Love did not. She adjusted the sleeves of her soft cream blouse and glanced at the clock. 8:47 p.m. Thirteen minutes until closing. The bell above the door chimed. She looked up. And time slowed. A tall man stepped inside, dark hair slightly damp from the rain. His white button-down shirt clung lightly to his broad shoulders. He paused near the entrance, taking in the pastel walls and glowing menu board like he wasn’t sure he belonged there. “Sorry,” he said, voice deep but warm. “Are you still open?” “For thirteen more minutes,” she replied calmly. He smiled — and something in her chest tightened unexpectedly. He walked toward the counter, hands sliding into his pockets. Up close, she noticed the faint shadow of stubble along his jaw and the way his eyes softened when he looked at her. “What do you recommend?” he asked. “For someone who came in on a rainy night?” she said thoughtfully. “Yes.” She leaned slightly forward. “Caramel swirl. Sweet… but with a little edge.” His lips curved slowly. “Sounds dangerous.” “It isn’t,” she said softly. “Unless you want it to be.” Their eyes held for one second too long. She quickly turned to scoop the ice cream, annoyed at the warmth rising to her cheeks. When she handed him the cup, their fingers brushed. Electric. Both of them froze. Neither pulled away immediately. He cleared his throat first. “I’m Michael.” She hesitated just a fraction before answering. “Alana.” He tasted the ice cream, closing his eyes briefly. “I think I just found my new favorite place.” Her heart shouldn’t have skipped. But it did. Outside, the rain continued to fall. Inside, something far more dangerous had just begun.
