Chapter 2: The Bombshell at the Board

701 Words
The morning sun beat down ruthlessly on the college building, matching the anxious sweat breaking out on Dan's forehead. He slipped into his armchair just as the warning bell rang, his eyes heavy from the late-night calculus crunch. "Hey," Ted hissed from the next row, leaning over. "You look like a zombie, man. Did you actually copy all those notes?" "Every single line," Dan muttered, rubbing his eyes. "If my mom asks, I was studying. Don't ruin my alibi." Before Ted could reply, the classroom door clicked open. The usual morning chatter died instantly, replaced by a sudden, collective intake of breath. Dan, who was busy unzipping his backpack, didn't look up right away. "Is she here?" he whispered. "Dude," Ted choked out, kicking the leg of Dan's desk. "Look. Up. Now." Dan raised his head, and his mind went completely blank. Standing at the podium was a woman who looked like she belonged on a high-fashion runway rather than a dusty college platform. She possessed sharp, striking features and an effortless elegance. Perched perfectly on the bridge of her nose was a pair of chic, dark-rimmed eyeglasses. Far from hiding her beauty, the glasses added an intellectual, sophisticated edge that commanded the entire room before she even spoke a word. She wore a tailored blazer that did nothing to hide her stunning, model-like figure, and her long dark hair fell in perfect waves over her shoulders. For a second, Dan forgot how to breathe. The agonizing pressure from his father, the looming threat of the family business, and the dread of calculus completely vanished from his mind. He was utterly mesmerized, his eyes tracking the subtle gleam of the morning light against her lenses. A slow heat stirred low in his stomach—unfamiliar, involuntary, and impossible to ignore. Two rows ahead of them sat Chell. As the undisputed campus belle, she was entirely accustomed to being the absolute center of attention. Every guy in school usually tripped over themselves just to catch her eye, especially now that she was newly single. But as she looked around the room, she noticed a shift that made her blood run cold. Every single male classmate—including Dan, whose usual quiet gaze she secretly enjoyed—had their eyes absolutely glued to the front of the room. Chell's jaw tightened. She looked back up at Ms. Cruz, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. A sharp pang of jealousy flared in her chest. She crossed her legs with a loud, deliberate rustle of her uniform skirt, trying to draw back some focus, but it was useless. The boys were totally hypnotized. Chell let out a quiet, frustrated huff, glaring at the new professor's flawless profile. Ms. Cruz turned to the whiteboard, her movements graceful, and wrote her name in clean, elegant cursive: Ms. Vanessa Cruz. When she faced the class again, she gently pushed her eyeglasses up with one finger. A poised, confident smile played on her lips—a stark contrast to their previous professor's permanent scowl. "Good morning, class," Ms. Cruz said, her voice smooth, clear, and perfectly articulated. "I know transitions can be difficult, especially in a subject as demanding as second-year calculus. But I promise you, if you give me your focus, we will get through this grading period together." Her gaze swept across the room, her eyes sharp and observant behind her glasses. They briefly locked onto Dan. He instantly froze, his heart doing a strange, erratic flutter against his ribs. From the corner of her eye, Chell caught Dan's sudden rigidity. She shot a quick, burning glare back toward his desk, her lips pressed into a thin, resentful line. Ted leaned over again, a smug smirk plastered across his face. "So," he whispered loudly to Dan. "Still want to complain about the new face? Look at Chell, too. She looks like she wants to burn the whiteboard down." Dan didn't even turn to look at his friend, completely missing Chell's warning glance. He just kept his eyes glued to the front of the room, swallowing hard as he opened his notebook. For the first time in his life, he was actually looking forward to math class.
