Chapter 9: The Expectation

660 Words
The atmosphere inside the dining room of the mansion was suffocatingly quiet, punctuated only by the rhythmic, sharp clinking of silver forks against fine porcelain plates. A grand crystal chandelier hung above the long mahogany table, casting a cold, brilliant light over the evening meal. Despite the wealth that surrounded them, there was no warmth to be found within the high walls of the estate. Daniel sat stiffly in his chair, keeping his eyes trained strictly downward on his food. To the rest of the university campus, he was a quiet sophomore trying to find his footing, but within his own home, he was simply the youngest son under a microscope. "I received the preliminary enrollment report from your department this morning, Daniel," his father's booming, authoritative voice cut through the silence. Arthur was a imposing man, his sharp eyes reflecting the same unyielding discipline that had allowed him to build a massive corporate empire from the ground up. He set his wine glass down with a heavy, deliberate thud. "This semester is critical. I expect nothing less than top marks across all your advanced courses, especially your quantitative modules. You must secure a pristine grade point average until you graduate. "Daniel swallowed hard, his posture tightening. "Yes, Dad. I'm focusing heavily on my curriculum." Across the table, his mother remained entirely silent, her gaze fixed securely on her plate as she neatly cut her food. She was a thoroughly submissive wife, entirely conditioned over the decades never to interrupt or question her husband’s absolute authority. She offered no gentle glances, no silent signs of reassurance—just a passive, elegant compliance that mirrored the sterile luxury of the house itself. Though his family possessed immense wealth, Daniel enjoyed none of the typical privileges that came with it. While his second-year university peers spent their weekends partying at exclusive clubs or traveling on whim, Daniel lived under a strict, militaristic routine. His schedule was heavily monitored, his freedom entirely restricted to commuting between his lectures and his bedroom. The family's fortune wasn't a ticket to freedom; it was a gilded cage designed to manufacture compliance. "You need to remember who you are, and what name you carry," Arthur continued, his tone turning sharper as he leaned forward. "Your eldest brother graduated at the absolute top of his class and is already expanding our logistics division into the European market. Your sister finished her finance degree with highest honors and successfully launched her own venture capital firm without a single dime of my assistance. They built success through sheer, unyielding merit." The heavy weight of the comparison settled onto Daniel’s shoulders like a block of concrete. He was constantly living in the towering shadows of his hyper-successful siblings, viewed by his father as the only variable left to perfect. "I will not tolerate a weak link in this family," Arthur added coldly, his eyes locking onto his youngest son with absolute intensity. "If you fall behind, or if your focus wavers for even a single week, there will be severe consequences regarding your future placement in the firm. Do you understand me?" "I understand, Dad," Daniel replied softly, keeping his voice perfectly disciplined and devoid of any defiance. He was playful with Ted, but at home, he had learned that survival meant absolute silence. As his father returned to his meal, the heavy quiet reclaimed the dining room. Daniel picked at his food, his mind completely numb to the corporate threats. Under the immense pressure of his father’s demands, his thoughts found an unexpected, forbidden escape. He didn't think about his siblings' accomplishments, nor did he think about the daunting calculus formulas on his desk upstairs. Instead, his mind drifted back to the lecture hall—remembering the sharp, captivating elegance of Ms. Cruz as she effortlessly dismantled Chell's trap, and the intoxicating scent of vanilla that seemed to promise a completely different, dangerous world far away from his father's control.
