The heavy mahogany door of his bedroom shut out the sterile silence of the mansion, but it could not lock out the suffocating pressure of his father’s words. Fresh from the dining table, Dan dropped his backpack onto the floor and slumped into the ergonomic chair at his study desk.
He flipped open his advanced calculus textbook, the bright white pages staring back at him with an array of complex functions, limits, and derivative matrices. He gripped a mechanical pencil, forcing his eyes to track the lines of text. He needed top marks. He needed to prove he wasn't the weak link in the family business legacy.
But the numbers on the page refused to form logical patterns. Every time he tried to calculate a boundary limit, the crisp white paper seemed to dissolve, replaced by the vivid image of Ms. Cruz standing at the lecture podium.
Dan let out a sharp, irritated breath, tossing the pencil onto the desk. It rattled against his laptop, the sudden sound echoing loudly in the quiet room. He couldn't think straight. His mind was completely compromised. He stood up from the study table, his muscles tight with a mounting frustration, and walked over to his bed. He threw himself down against the mattress, staring up at the dimly lit ceiling, hoping the change of posture would clear his head.
It only made it worse.
Lying in the quiet dark, the sterile atmosphere of his room completely vanished. A sudden, overwhelming memory of the afternoon swept over him, accompanied by the phantom, intoxicating scent of vanilla and fresh linen that seemed to linger directly in his senses. He could distinctly recall the brief, accidental weight of his forearm pressing against the soft curve of her side breast, and the elegant, rhythmic sway of her hips as she walked down the corridor.
A sudden, dizzying rush of heat hit his body. His chest heaved as a wave of overwhelming tension crashed over him, leaving his skin flushed and his mind racing with the pressure of the day. The images of the lecture hall and the expectations placed upon him swirled together, making it impossible to find any sense of calm.
Unable to handle the intense, suffocating restlessness building inside him, Dan abruptly stood up from the bed. Moving on pure impulse, he hurried into the privacy of his adjoining bathroom and shut the door behind him. He splashed cold water onto his face, hoping the bracing chill would snap him out of his spiraling thoughts. He stood there for a long moment in the quiet, focused on his breathing, trying to extinguish the internal heat and frustration that had consumed him throughout the evening.
