Chapter 5: Double Life

972 Words
The vibrant energy of the campus faded into a heavy, echoing silence by seven in the evening. Inside the faculty lounge, a single desk lamp casts a sharp beam of light across a mountain of advanced curriculum guides, syllabus drafts, and student rosters. Transitioning into academia was proving to be far more exhausting than any tactical mission she had ever executed in her life. Adjusting to the rigid bureaucracy of a university required a completely different kind of stamina, one that involved patience rather than precision. She packed her things into her sleek leather tote bag, locked the heavy office door behind her, and made her way through the dimly lit corridors. The rhythmic, heavy click of her heels echoed off the polished floors, a stark contrast to the chaotic chatter and slamming books that had filled the space hours earlier. To the rest of the faculty and her students, she was simply Vanessa Cruz—an overqualified, dedicated new mathematics instructor trying to get a handle on her university curriculum. Her apartment was located in a quiet, high-end complex fifteen minutes away from the campus. It was a minimalist sanctuary, meticulously stripped of anything that could tie her to her true identity or her past life. She unlocked the heavy deadbolt, stepped into the dark entryway, and let out a long, controlled breath. Dropping her keys onto the entryway tray with a sharp metallic click, she began to shed the day's professional armor. Standing before the full-length mirror in her bathroom, she slowly unbuttoned her silk blouse and slid the tailored slacks down her legs, revealing the breathtaking physics of her form. Stripped of her structured academic wardrobe, her silhouette was nothing short of stunning—an exquisite balance of dangerous athleticism and striking femininity. Her skin was a flawless, porcelain expanse, marred only by faint, pale reminders of her past precision training. The gentle taper of her waist flared into full, beautifully rounded hips and a perfectly sculpted, firm backside that defied her hours spent sitting at a lecture podium. Her breasts were full and natural, lifting gracefully with every controlled breath she took. As she unpinned her dark hair, letting it cascade down her bare shoulders in rich waves, she looked less like a university educator and more like a classical masterpiece carved from marble. Away from the classroom, she was no longer the polite academic, Vanessa. Here, she was Elena. Turning on the fixtures, she let steam slowly fill the room, scenting the air with a soothing blend of eucalyptus and lavender. Elena stepped into the deep, freestanding tub, sinking into the scalding water until it reached her shoulders. As the physical tension drained from her body, her mind began to drift. Instead of reviewing her lesson plans or calculating her grading rubric for the upcoming week, an entirely different image flashed vividly behind her eyelids. She saw Dan. Specifically, she remembered the sheer panic in his wide eyes when his forearm had brushed against her side, and the frantic, head-shaking embarrassment he displayed in the hallway when she caught him staring at her. A faint, genuine smile tugged at the corner of her lips. It was highly unusual for her. Throughout her life, Elena had remained entirely disciplined, cold, and calculated—never easily distracted by men, let alone a second-year college student. Yet, there was an innocent, raw vulnerability to the young man that intrigued her, a sharp contrast to the hardened, deceptive people she usually dealt with in her alternative circles. The sudden, harsh vibration of her smartphone against the marble countertop shattered the quiet atmosphere. The screen illuminated the dim, steamy room, displaying an encrypted, unlisted number that she knew all too well. She sighed, reaching out of the warm water and swiping the screen to answer it. "Speak." "Ma'am, we need a timeline," her assistant’s voice cut through the line, crisp, urgent, and heavily modulated for security. "The board is asking when you intend to return. The bounty is massive, and the client specifically requested your tier of expertise. They are willing to pay double for your hand on this." The words felt like a cold draft slicing through the warm bathroom. The woman the university knew as Vanessa Cruz was not just a math professor; Elena was the sole heir to a legendary, highly secretive, and immensely prestigious mercenary syndicate. The teaching position at the university wasn't just a career change—it was a deep-cover lifestyle. "I told you before I left, I am on indefinite hiatus," Elena replied, her voice dropping into a cold, commanding register that none of her students or fellow faculty members would ever recognize. "Do not call this line unless the organization is burning down." "The organization is restless without you," the assistant pressed gently, knowing the risk of pushing her but bound by duty. "You belong in the field, Elena, not grading papers and hiding in a lecture hall under an alias." "I gave my word," Elena said firmly, her gaze fixing on the steam rising toward the ceiling. Her mind flashed back to her grandfather's final days, just months ago. On his deathbed, the fierce old warlord who had raised her in the shadow of violence had gripped her hand, his eyes softened by a rare, painful regret. He had begged her to walk away from the blood, the contracts, and the endless cycle of vengeance from rival factions that had claimed the rest of their family. "Live a normal life", he had whispered with his final breaths. Find peace away from the harm we built. "Be someone else". "Keep the board at bay," Elena commanded, cutting off her assistant's impending reply. "My decision stands. I am a professor now. Delete this routing number." She ended the call before another word could be said.
