THE MIDNIGHT CHAPEL

Beyond the Silk Veil Chapter Three: The Midnight Chapel The rain had stopped, but the streets still glistened beneath the moonlight as Seraphina guided her car through the sleeping city. The anonymous note lay on the passenger seat, its words echoing in her mind. Come alone. Trust no one—not even your father. She had spent the entire day convincing herself not to go. Yet here she was. At exactly eleven fifty-five, she pulled into the deserted courtyard of Saint Elora Chapel, a centuries-old church tucked away from the bustle of the city. Time had weathered its stone walls, but its towering bell tower still stood proudly against the night sky. The silence was unsettling. Only the soft rustle of leaves and the distant toll of the church bell broke the stillness. Seraphina stepped out of the car and walked toward the heavy wooden doors. They creaked open before she touched them. Inside, hundreds of candles flickered, casting long shadows across the stone floor. "You're punctual." The voice came from the darkness. An elderly priest emerged slowly from behind a column, his silver hair glowing in the candlelight. "I've been expecting you, Miss Laurent." Seraphina frowned. "You sent the note?" The priest shook his head. "No." "Then who did?" "They asked me to bring you here." Her heart raced. "Who are they?" Instead of answering, the priest walked toward the altar and gently lifted a worn wooden box from beneath it. He placed it in her hands. "This belonged to your mother." Seraphina stared at the box in disbelief. "My mother?" "She entrusted it to this church many years ago." Her fingers trembled as she opened the lid. Inside were three items. A delicate silver locket. An old journal bound in burgundy leather. And a small brass key. Tucked beneath them was a folded letter addressed in elegant handwriting. To My Daughter, Seraphina. Tears filled her eyes. The handwriting was unmistakable. It was her mother's. With trembling hands, she unfolded the letter. My dearest Seraphina, If you are reading this, then the truth I fought so hard to protect has finally begun to surface. I never wanted this burden to become yours, but some secrets cannot remain hidden forever. There are people who will lie to you. Some will wear familiar faces. Remember this above all else: the greatest danger often comes from those closest to us. Do not hate your father. He made choices he believed would protect you, even if they cost us everything. The key will lead you to what I could never reveal. When the time is right, trust your heart more than your eyes. I have always loved you. Mother. A tear rolled down Seraphina's cheek. For years, she had longed to hear her mother's voice again. Now, through ink on faded paper, it felt as though she had. Before she could gather her thoughts, the chapel doors slammed shut with a thunderous bang. The candles flickered violently. The priest's face turned pale. "They've found you." "Who has?" A loud crash echoed from outside. Then came footsteps. Several pairs. Getting closer. The priest hurried toward a narrow side passage. "Quickly! This way!" "But what about you?" "I'll delay them." "No! Come with me!" He smiled sadly. "My time was never as important as yours." Reluctantly, Seraphina clutched the wooden box and followed the hidden passage. It led into a narrow stone corridor beneath the chapel. As she reached the end, she looked back. The last thing she saw was the priest closing the secret door. Then darkness. Moments later, muffled voices echoed through the walls. "Search everywhere!" "She can't have gone far!" Seraphina held her breath. She pressed the journal and the brass key tightly against her chest. Someone knew about her mother's letter. Someone wanted it badly enough to break into a church. And someone had been waiting nearly twenty years for this night. As she slipped into the darkness beneath Saint Elora Chapel, Seraphina realized the mystery wasn't just about her family's fortune. It was about a promise her mother had died trying to keep.
