Beyond the Silk Veil
Chapter Six: Where Time Stopped
The antique pocket watch rested heavily in Seraphina's hand.
Its cracked glass reflected the dim light of her apartment, the hands forever frozen at 11:47.
"Meet me where time stopped."
The words replayed in her mind.
Whoever had stolen the brass key wanted her to solve a puzzle.
Or perhaps... they wanted to lure her into a trap.
Seraphina barely slept.
At dawn, she spread the contents of her mother's journal across the dining table.
She searched every page, every margin, every fold for a clue.
Then she noticed something she had overlooked.
Pressed between two pages was an old newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
"Historic Laurent Clock Tower Destroyed in Explosion."
Her eyes widened.
According to the article, the tower's massive clock had stopped at exactly 11:47 p.m.
The same time shown on the pocket watch.
The explosion had happened eighteen years earlier.
Officially, it had been blamed on faulty electrical wiring.
Unofficially...
No one had ever believed it.
By afternoon, Seraphina stood before the ruins of the Laurent Clock Tower.
The abandoned structure rose above the city like a forgotten monument.
Its stone walls were scarred by fire.
The clock face still displayed 11:47.
Nature had slowly reclaimed the place, with vines creeping over broken windows and weeds pushing through cracked pavement.
She stepped inside.
Dust filled the air.
Broken gears and shattered pieces of stained glass covered the floor.
Every footstep echoed through the empty tower.
Then she heard another sound.
Footsteps.
Not hers.
"You're late."
A man's voice came from the shadows.
Seraphina turned.
A tall man stepped into the light.
He appeared to be in his late thirties, dressed in a dark overcoat. His face was calm, but his eyes carried the weight of countless sleepless nights.
"Ethan Cole?"
He nodded.
"You've grown to look just like your mother."
Seraphina stared at him.
"You knew her."
"I owed her my life."
She folded her arms.
"Then start explaining."
Ethan glanced toward the broken clock.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because we're not alone."
Before she could respond...
A loud c***k echoed through the tower.
Glass shattered.
A bullet struck the wall only inches from Ethan's head.
"Down!" he shouted.
Both of them threw themselves behind a fallen stone pillar.
Another shot rang out.
Someone was firing from outside.
Ethan pulled a small flashlight from his coat.
"There should be another exit."
"You knew this would happen?"
"I hoped it wouldn't."
They hurried through the tower's lower level, weaving between broken machinery.
More gunshots echoed behind them.
Stone fragments rained from the ceiling.
Finally, Ethan pushed open an old iron door leading into an underground maintenance tunnel.
They slammed it shut behind them.
Silence.
Only their breathing filled the darkness.
Several minutes later, they stopped beside a rusted steel gate.
Ethan leaned against the wall.
"They're getting bolder."
"Who are they?" Seraphina demanded.
"They call themselves The Veil Society."
"The Veil Society?"
"They're an organization that has existed for generations."
"What do they want?"
"They protect secrets."
"And kill anyone who uncovers them."
Seraphina's stomach tightened.
"My mother knew about them."
"Yes."
"And my father?"
Ethan hesitated.
"He knew enough to fear them."
Seraphina felt as though the ground had shifted beneath her.
"So all these years..."
"Your family wasn't simply wealthy."
Ethan looked directly into her eyes.
"They were part of something much bigger."
Before she could ask another question, Ethan reached into his coat and removed a small velvet pouch.
Inside...
Was the missing brass key.
Seraphina's eyes widened.
"You stole it?"
"I had to."
"What?"
"If I'd left it in your apartment, they would have taken it before sunrise."
"You could have told me!"
"I couldn't risk them knowing I was protecting you."
He placed the key in her hand.
"This key opens the vault beneath Blackwood Manor."
"And what's inside?"
Ethan's expression darkened.
"The evidence that could destroy the Veil Society forever."
At that very moment, a loud metallic clang echoed through the tunnel.
Someone was forcing open the iron gate behind them.
Voices followed.
"They're here!"
"Search every tunnel!"
Ethan drew a deep breath.
"They've found us."
He looked at Seraphina with unwavering determination.
"From this moment on, your life will never be the same."
The lights above flickered once...
Then went out completely.
Darkness swallowed the tunnel.
And from somewhere ahead, a familiar voice whispered,
"Welcome back, Ethan."
