Beyond the Silk Veil Chapter Nine: A House Divided The courtyard fell into complete silence. Victor Ashcroft stood with quiet confidence, his silver cane resting lightly against the stone driveway. Behind him, officers from the National Intelligence Directorate surrounded the Laurent Estate. Alexander Laurent took a step forward. "I have nothing to say to you." Victor smiled. "After all these years, Alexander... I expected a warmer welcome." Seraphina looked from one man to the other. "You know each other?" Victor's eyes remained fixed on Alexander. "We were once partners." Alexander's face darkened. "Don't twist the truth." "The truth?" Victor chuckled. "That's exactly why we're here." Two officers approached Alexander. "Mr. Laurent, you'll need to come with us." Before they could place him in handcuffs, Celeste stepped forward. "Wait." Everyone turned toward her. She reached into her coat and removed a sealed envelope. "I think you'll want to read this first." The lead investigator carefully opened it. Inside was a signed affidavit. After reading only a few lines, his expression changed completely. "Where did you get this?" "My adoptive father kept it hidden for years," Celeste replied. "He told me to reveal it only if Victor Ashcroft tried to frame Alexander Laurent." Victor's smile vanished. The investigator read aloud. "If this letter is ever found, know that Alexander Laurent is innocent of Isabella's death. The attack on Blackwood Manor was orchestrated by men acting under Victor Ashcroft's orders..." A murmur spread through the crowd. Victor laughed softly. "Convenient." He looked at the investigator. "A letter proves nothing." "It proves enough to delay an arrest," the investigator replied. The officers lowered their weapons. Victor's calm expression never changed, but his eyes hardened. Seraphina turned to Celeste. "You saved him." "I didn't do it for him." "Then why?" Celeste looked directly at her. "I did it for our mother." For the first time since arriving at the estate, the coldness in Celeste's face softened. "I grew up believing Alexander abandoned me." She glanced toward him. "But I recently discovered someone spent years making sure I believed that." Alexander stepped closer. "I searched for you." "You stopped." "No." He shook his head. "They made me stop." "Who?" "The Veil Society." Just then, a black motorcycle sped through the open gates. The rider skidded to a stop in the center of the courtyard. Removing his helmet, he revealed a bruised but familiar face. "Ethan!" Seraphina exclaimed. He was alive. Ethan hurried toward them. "We don't have much time." Victor frowned. "You should be dead." "I disappointed you." Ethan ignored him and handed Seraphina a small flash drive. "Everything we recovered from Blackwood Manor is here." She stared at it. "The evidence?" "Only part of it." Victor's composure finally cracked. "Take it from her!" Several masked figures hidden among the trees rushed toward the courtyard. Chaos erupted. Security guards exchanged blows with the attackers as guests and servants fled inside the mansion. Ethan grabbed Seraphina's arm. "Run!" "But my father—" "Alexander can protect himself." A loud explosion shook the entrance gates. Smoke engulfed the driveway. Through the haze, Victor disappeared. Minutes later, police reinforcements arrived, forcing the masked attackers to retreat. When the smoke cleared, Victor Ashcroft was gone. So was the flash drive. Seraphina looked at her empty hand in horror. "No..." Ethan searched the ground desperately. "It was here." A familiar voice spoke from the mansion steps. "Looking for this?" Everyone turned. Standing beneath the grand entrance was the elderly butler, Thomas. He held the flash drive between his fingers. His gentle smile was gone. "I've served the Laurent family for thirty years." He slowly placed the flash drive into his pocket. "But I've served the Veil Society even longer." Alexander's face filled with disbelief. "Thomas..." "You trusted the wrong man." Before anyone could stop him, Thomas pressed a hidden switch on his wristwatch. The marble floor beneath the entrance split apart. A concealed elevator descended into darkness. Thomas stepped inside. The doors began to close. As they did, he looked at Seraphina one last time. "If you want the truth..." "...come beneath the manor." The doors shut. The elevator disappeared. Leaving behind only silence... ...and the shocking realization that the greatest betrayal had been living inside the Laurent family all along.
