Beyond the Silk Veil
Chapter One: The Perfect Illusion
The first rays of dawn spilled across the sprawling Laurent Estate, turning its marble walls into shimmering gold. Beyond the towering iron gates, fountains danced in perfect rhythm while gardeners trimmed roses that had never known neglect. It was a home admired by many and envied by even more—a palace where perfection was expected and weakness was never forgiven.
At exactly eight o'clock, a sleek black luxury sedan rolled to the front entrance.
The chauffeur stepped out and opened the rear door.
Seraphina Laurent emerged with effortless grace.
Dressed in a cream-colored silk ensemble beneath an ivory tailored coat, she looked every bit the woman the magazines adored. Diamond earrings caught the morning light, and her calm expression concealed the storm she had learned to bury years ago.
To the outside world, she was the daughter of billionaire industrialist Alexander Laurent—a woman blessed with beauty, wealth, influence, and limitless opportunity.
No one knew she had not slept in three nights.
Inside the mansion, silence lingered like an unwelcome guest.
Portraits of generations past watched from the walls as servants moved carefully through the halls, avoiding eye contact. Something had changed within the Laurent family. No one dared speak of it, yet everyone felt it.
Seraphina climbed the grand staircase toward her father's study.
Before she could knock, his stern voice echoed through the heavy oak doors.
"Come in."
Alexander Laurent stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate. Even in his sixties, he commanded respect with a single glance. Success had made him powerful. Loss had made him cold.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"You've become quite popular in the media."
Seraphina smiled faintly.
"I thought that was good for the company."
"It is," he replied. "Until people begin asking questions."
Her smile disappeared.
"What questions?"
Finally, he faced her.
"The kind that destroy families."
The words settled heavily between them.
For the first time in years, Seraphina noticed fear in her father's eyes.
Alexander walked to his desk and placed an old envelope before her.
Its edges were worn, its seal faded with time.
"I received this yesterday."
She carefully opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A younger version of her mother stood beside a man Seraphina had never seen before. They weren't strangers.
They were smiling.
Comfortably.
Intimately.
On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words.
The truth never stays buried forever.
Her heartbeat quickened.
"My mother never told me about him."
"Neither did I," Alexander answered quietly.
Before Seraphina could ask another question, the study doors burst open.
The family attorney hurried inside, pale and visibly shaken.
"Mr. Laurent..."
"What is it?" Alexander demanded.
The attorney struggled to steady his voice.
"The board has called an emergency meeting."
Alexander frowned.
"Why?"
"They've received documents proving that someone inside the Laurent family has been hiding a secret worth billions."
Silence swallowed the room.
Seraphina stared once more at the photograph clutched tightly in her trembling hands.
Outside, the morning sun continued to shine over the magnificent estate.
Inside, the first c***k had appeared in the perfect illusion.
And neither wealth, power, nor prestige would be enough to stop what was coming.
