The room around me was white. I shifted uncomfortably in the cheap bed, wishing more than anything I could stand. I could feel the cast around my ankle, and when I struggled to sit up it was easy to feel the swathe of bandages around my arm and shoulder. I hardly noticed as I looked into the hallway. In the nearby seat, Brenda was shuffling uncomfortably. After the explanation of the competition, neither of us seemed to have a thing to say. Her presence didn't matter much to me either way.
