CHAPTER THREE

1154 Words
Mr. Adams and Mrs. Adams are having a conversation in their sitting room “My dear, are you sure of this whole marriage arrangement?” She said unhappily "What sort of question is that?” He asked bluntly “Hmmm, you know I'm a woman and I know how bitter swallowing this pill is for her," She said bitterly "Do you think I'm also happy with all this arrangement?” He replied softly "I would just suggest we go to her and ask her if she wants to do this. I think we should just listen to her. If she sees him and she is not interested, I think you should return his money.” She pleaded "No, this can not work. The best we can do is to appeal to her to accept him just as he is. And to be of good behavior when she gets to his house. I'm sure she will be fine.” He said “Hmmm, She has not been eating anything ever since the past 3 days. She has been thinking and sobbing. I'm scared. Our daughter is not happy." She said disturbed "I think you should go to her room and speak with her in a way she will understand. Please, my dear wife.” He said softly “Okay, my husband. I'm coming. I hope she truly understands.” She replied. Mrs Adams left for Nicole's room and knocked on her door. "My daughter. Please, open up. I want to have a word with you.” Her mother said “Let me be,” Nicole responded as she continued crying “I am your mother. I am here to discuss this with you. Please, just hear me out” Her mother said She banged the door as she continued knocking. Nicole refuses to open up to her “I know you are in there, and you are hearing me; I have come so we can reason together as a mother to daughter. Please, Nicole.” Her mother said with a disturbed tone “I am coming,” Nicole responded as she cleaned her face to open up to her mother. Her mother hugged her and they shed tears together. Her mother sat her down on the bed and she also took her seat. “Nicole my daughter. If I tell you that I'm happy with this arrangement, then it means I'm a liar." Her mother said with a bittered tone “Mummy, let's not do this, please. It's only a commodity that can be sold and I am not one. I have the freedom to choose who I would love to live the rest of my life with and not my parents selling me out for riches.” Nicole reacted faintly “My daughter, I want to ask you these?" Her nothing said “What's that, Mom" she replied “Why exactly are you against this arrangement?" "Is it because your father consented to his idea of marrying you in exchange for his favor?” “Or, because you thought you wouldn't like him when you get to meet with him?” Her mother asked calmly “Mummy, all these questions are not necessary. Everything does not seem right with this arrangement." Nicole responded "No responsible man would want a woman in exchange for his money. This man will be so domineering. He believes that money can get everything even a woman he hasn't met. He is not in love with me. He might just need me to satisfy his urge while he chases other ladies…….” Nicole said convincingly "Hmmm, my daughter, I'm short of words," Her mother said “To think that Dad did not care to know my idea about this says it all. I am not the reason for Dad's failed farm plantation business. I have a life to live. I have dreams to pursue. I….” Nicole muttered “I understand you so deeply, my daughter. But as it is, there's nothing we can do about it. It's a done deal already, please just try and understand." Her mother said as she took a grasp of deep breath “Mum. What if after he comes to pick me up as agreed, and I'm now his wife, and he restricts you from coming to see me as my mother all because he bought me with money? How would you feel? Or, what would you do?” Nicole asked Her mother opened her mouth in shock upon hearing the question Nicole asked “A man that didn't seek a lady's approval of marriage would never need her opinion in the marriage,” Nicole said with certainty “Nicole, what if he is a good man?” Her mother thought Mr. Adams's phone rings out loud and it is Nelson calling “Hello, my son,” Mr. Adams said “Your son?” Nelson asked surprisingly “Good morning,” he quickly said consciously “Good morning. How are you?” Mr. Adams asked friendly “I am doing good. I just called to inform you that I'm coming to pick up my wife this evening. So I need her to pack her necessities so she won't waste my time." Nelson said arrogantly "Oh, so quick. I don't know it would be this fast” Mr. Adams asked fidgeting “Do you have any problem with that?” Nelson voiced out as he cut in his words “Oh, no. She's yours. We will be expecting you in the evening. Drive safely.” Mr Adams said, and Nelson cut the call. Mr. Adams became more worried as his arrival drew nearer. He was shocked by the tone Nelson used in conversing with him. It was full of authority and it was domineering. He became scared of his daughter's safety in his house. “I hope I'm not making a grave mistake by consenting to this?” “I can just return his money and tell him not to worry. It's no longer going well in my spirit anymore. I don't think my daughter will find peace and joy in his land.” He soliloquized “My hands are so tight on this matter. There's nothing I can do. I can't refund the money and I can't say NO when he comes to take her. I just hope she feels good in the long run.” He said with pity to himself. Nicole was clouded with tears; her arms were on her face. She was indeed frustrated with the all narrative. She needed an escape from her shadows. Mr. Adams resulted to going to see his wife and Nicole. To prepare her heart for what's happening in the evening. So she could start packing her luggage. Mr. Adams opened the door, and seeing Nicole in such a position struck a pain in his heart. “Nicole, what is the matter?” He asked faintly
