"I THINK that we have met before, sir," said Superintendent Laurence to Meredith. "Are not you the gentleman who called for the key of Carfax Abbey? I thought so. Well, have you discovered anything?"
"I think I have. That is why I am here to-day."
Thereupon he told him of his interview with Gomez; how he had confessed that his evidence at the inquest was false; how both Parish and the butler had confirmed his confession that he did go down to the Abbey, and how Miss Thring had found in the cloister the letter which he swore he had destroyed.
"Here is the letter, superintendent; you will see in it evidence that Gomez had given some sort of ultimatum to Warren, and, therefore, he committed another act of perjury when he tried to explain away the abbreviation 'ult.'"
