Magic Be Damned

“Sam! You... hah...” John was about to ask the cold-blooded man if he sensed the mana too, but seeing him carrying the bloody head with him out of the room, he could only sigh and mourn for the girl. “I don’t know what to do with you. She cared about you even more than anything in her life. Even if you told her about the real you, she would not mind about your crime! Alas, it’s too late now that you killed her,” he lamented. Sam looked at the man with a deadpan look, “Is that all you want to say? If that's all, then I have something important to do.” He was about to leave the man, but John stopped him once more, “Wait! Sam, didn’t you feel the mana thing like the rumor too? We might be able to do something about her!” The cold look in his eyes melted, replaced by murderous glare as he turned to face the man, “Why do you care about her so much? If you like her, then you should have been the one to date her!” That startled the man. He took a step back and raised his hand in surrender as Sam was still holding his bloody knife. “Chill, man! She just reminds me of my late wife before her death. You know I have been researching immortality for years because of this, I just can’t help it when I see a girl with such a sincere feeling died just like that. Moreover, you know that I only love one person in my entire life,” he tried to explain. “Tsk, this sick bastard, why do I even associate myself with him?” Sam thought as he knew the man was telling the truth. For the last three years, he had seen John carrying an ice box everywhere. At one chance he got to see what was inside the box, and that made him realize that John was actually even more sick than he was. “Who would carry their wife’s corpse even after years? He even creases the box with affection and talks to it! He is crazy! I should get rid of him as soon as possible,” he thought. “Come on, Sam! I might be able to help. With all my research and this new magic thingy, I should be able to revive her!” the man said with fervor and fanaticism. “What magic? I don’t believe in magic! Aren’t you ashamed of yourself? How can you call yourself a researcher if you believe in such a thing?!” he castigated the man. Had enough with the man’s nonsense, Sam left even with the man trying to stop him. He arrived at a room filled with giant machines and computers. In the machines, pulsing organs could be seen. Half a dozen brains were floating in a tube of liquid used to preserve them. Despite that, the brains’ condition was anything but stellar. Some of them rot, while others burnt from electric discharges. All in all, Sam had been on a dead end since he started over his experiment. “Without the advanced technology of a real lab and sufficient funds, I can only do so much,” he mourned his failures. Sam had swindled an astronomical amount of money for his experiment, but it was only a speck of dust compared to the funding he got while he was working for the government’s lab. “Who would have thought this rumored mana is true, it just might be what I need to overcome his dead end!” he showed a rare smile as he opened an empty tube. With an uncanny dexterity, he split Lana’s head, scooping the brain out of its shell and depositing it into the tube before connecting some electrodes that connect the brain into some machines, then closed the tube. It took him less than a minute to finish the complex task, as if he had done it a hundred times already. “Alright, I overcame the first hurdle,” he thought as he knew that he needed to extract the brain quickly without damaging the brain tissue. “the next part is to replicate the brain into data. After all this year, I came to the conclusion that it's impossible to replicate the brain with an electricity based machine as the brain will be fried before the process is completed.” He went back through his theory. “There are only two solutions to this, one is to have a supercomputer that can finish the task before the brain gets damaged, or use another form of energy to replace electricity.” “Both of them were not available to me, but now I have one important ingredient to complete this!” He reached out and activated the computers but didn’t activate the tube. “If I have more time, then I would have built a machine to utilize this energy. Alas, according to Lana, this mana will only saturate the environment forever. If I miss this chance, then I might not be able to utilize it at all!” Sam pulled out the tube’s power cable out of the generator and held the cable in his hand. “Form my observation, this energy called mana is compatible with almost anything, and it can change according to one’s will. If it's not wrong, then I can direct this energy to replace the electricity needed to run this machine!” He closed his eyes and tried to sense the surrounding mana, but he could hardly sense them. Unlike the initial wave, the mana had become increasingly hard to sense. “I’m running out of time!” he realized that once he could not sense the energy, he would miss the chance to finish his project. He pushed everything else aside and focused his mind to sense the unfamiliar energy that remains around him. After a while, he noticed that he could hardly control this mana, unlike his theory, the surrounding mana was not as malleable. “It feels just like the air, it's all around, but it's hard to interact with it without proper equipment. Each time I tried to reach to it, it would just push it away!” “Wait! There is more to it! The similarity did not just stop there! Now that I compare it to air, I can feel the mana getting absorbed into my body just like breathing!” he got enlightened. But like breathing, the body absorbs mana unconsciously as a routine, but when he focused his mind, he could control it just like inhaling and exhaling, but just like breathing that made it harder to absorb mana automatically when he focused. “the mana is in my body, but where does it go? As far as I know, human anatomy doesn’t have any organ to regulate this energy,” he wondered. He patted his body, trying to sense where this energy went, but he could not find any hint. “I’m getting sidetracked, time is limited,” he was about to try to manipulate the mana round him once more, but he realized something. “The mana in my body is way more malleable!” he mused. “I can use the mana in my body, but I don’t know how much mana needed to run this machine. I better absorb as much as I can before attempting the project, the first try always has a higher chance of success, I don’t want the lack of energy to cause mishap on this project,” he thought. Sam inhaled the mana actively, absorbing as much mana ash as he could, way faster than it would do normally, but at some point, he could not absorb anymore mana. “It feels just like, inhaling too much air that you reach your limit, you end up holding your breath instead,” he thought. Could not hold the breath too long, Sam ended up letting go of the mana he absorbed back at the environment. He instinctively knew that the mana he released was not the same one as the mana he absorbed. “Huh? Is that the excretion? The impurities? If it is, then where does the purified mana go?” he wondered. “I don’t have time for this, for now I will just purify as much mana as possible before I can’t sense the mana anymore,” he decided. Sam repeated the cycle of inhaling and exhaling mana to gather purified mana to his body. He theorized that the reason mana in his body was more malleable was because they were purer. “I’m full,” he felt bloated, just like eating too much. His body started to reject mana from surrounding. “No, I won’t stop. Body can be trained to eat more, I will just absorb more and more until I can’t push it anymore!” he stubbornly mumbled. His body turned hot, he could feel a burning sensation from forcing the mana into his body but he did not stop despite the pain, his determination to finish his project was not that feeble that he gave up on it because of some pain. “With this, I can advance technology even further than anyone ever thought! Those who think using this to use magic is a damn fool, Magic be damned! HUAHAHAHA!” Just like people said, crazy people don't feel pain!
