The howl didn’t fade this time. It stayed. Hanging in the air like a warning that had already turned into action. Closer. Too close. Kael’s entire posture shifted instantly. Not panic. Not confusion. Instinct. Alpha instinct. The kind that didn’t ask questions before reacting. “Form a perimeter,” he ordered sharply. His warriors moved immediately. Fast. Precise. Well-trained. But even they looked uneasy now. Because this wasn’t just a rogue presence anymore. It felt organized. Intentional. Like something was testing the edges of Blackridge territory… and slowly tightening its grip. Theron stepped closer to me again. “We need to move her deeper inside the territory.” Kael didn’t look away from the trees. “No.” That single word cut through the forest like a blade. Theron frowned. “That wasn’t a suggestion.” Kael finally turned his head slightly. His eyes were colder now. More focused. “It was a command.” Silence. The warriors exchanged quick glances but didn’t intervene. Because they all knew what that tone meant. Alpha refusal. Final. Unchangeable. My chest tightened slightly. Not from fear of the threat outside. From the tension building inside this circle. Between Kael and Theron. Between control and uncertainty. Between instinct and something neither of them fully understood yet. The bond pulsed again. Stronger than before. I flinched slightly. Kael noticed instantly. His attention snapped to me. And for a moment, everything else faded. The forest. The warriors. Even the distant howls. Just him. Just me. Theron noticed the shift too. His expression darkened slightly. “The bond is reacting to stress escalation.” Kael didn’t take his eyes off me. “I can see that.” Another howl echoed. This time closer. A few warriors shifted uneasily. One of them spoke quietly. “Alpha… they’re not stopping.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “I know.” But he still didn’t move away from me. That realization sat heavily in my chest. Because part of me expected him to. To prioritize the pack. To choose strategy over proximity. That’s what an Alpha would normally do. Instead— He stayed. And the bond reacted again. Warm. Steady. Confusingly calm despite everything happening around us. I hated how quickly my body noticed that stability. Theron looked between us. “You’re stabilizing her without meaning to.” Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I’m not doing anything.” “That’s the problem,” Theron said quietly. The wind shifted sharply again. This time it wasn’t just movement. It carried scent. Foreign. Multiple. Kael’s head snapped toward the edge of the forest instantly. “Contact,” one of the warriors warned. Shadows moved between the trees. Not rushing. Not chaotic. Organized. Three figures stepped forward first. Then five more. Then more behind them. The clearing filled slowly with presence. Not full attack formation. Not yet. But enough to make it clear— They were not hiding anymore. Kael’s wolf surged instantly. I felt it through the bond like a pressure wave. Mine responded immediately. But differently. Not aggression. Awareness. The silver beneath my skin flickered softly. Theron cursed under his breath. “Red Hollow scouts.” Kael’s voice dropped dangerously low. “They’re on my land.” One of the scouts stepped forward. Smiling. Too calm. “Alpha Kael Draven,” he said politely. Kael didn’t respond. The scout’s gaze shifted slightly. And landed on me. Everything changed instantly. The air tightened. The bond pulsed sharply. My breath caught. The scout’s smile widened. “So it’s true.” Kael moved instantly. One step. But enough. He was in front of me again. Blocking. Protecting. The scout tilted his head slightly. “You’re guarding her,” he observed. Kael’s voice was ice. “Say what you came to say.” The scout chuckled softly. “No need for hostility.” A pause. “We’re not here to fight.” Theron’s expression darkened. “That’s never true when Red Hollow appears.” The scout ignored him. Instead, he looked past Kael. At me. Like I was the only thing that mattered in the clearing. “We’re here to confirm something,” he said quietly. Kael’s jaw tightened. “You already confirmed enough by stepping onto my territory.” The scout smiled. “No,” he said softly. “This is different.” Another pause. Then— “We’re here to see if the Moon-Blood heir can survive her first convergence.” The bond exploded. Pain. Heat. Shock. I gasped sharply and staggered. Kael caught me instantly. His grip firm. Instant. Unquestioning. The scout watched that reaction closely. Almost… satisfied. Theron’s voice dropped. “What convergence?” The scout finally looked at him. Then at Kael. Then back at me. “War,” he said simply. A pause. “And she is the center of it.” The forest went completely silent. Even the wind stopped again. Kael’s voice dropped dangerously low. “If you take one step closer—” The scout raised a hand slightly. Calm. Unbothered. “We won’t.” Another pause. Then he added quietly— “Because she won’t need us to.” The bond pulsed again. But this time— It didn’t feel like reaction. It felt like recognition. Like something inside me had already accepted what was coming. And for the first time— I wasn’t sure whether I was afraid of the war outside… or the power waking up inside me.
