Chapter 16: Whispered Desires in Binary Code

879 Words
Another day at work, and for the first time in weeks, the usual monotony took a back seat. My fingers danced over the keyboard, bringing our latest AI project-Luna-to life. It was akin to writing a novel, but instead of characters, I was programming responses, emotions-essence. It was a writer's high, in tech terms. The office's usual backdrop, the incessant humming of machines and whispered gossip, was punctuated by a notable absence: Luke. He was the kind of boss whose mere shadow could spark a flurry of activity. His relentless drive usually meant him hounding me for updates, but today? Radio silence. I should've been relieved, but instead, a strange, inexplicable itch of concern settled in. Interrupting my reverie, the intercom's soft ping had an almost jarring effect. I swear, the next thing I expected was a growl, but his voice, rough and with an unfamiliar vulnerability, commanded, "Emily, my office. Now." The sight that met me was not the Luke Walton I knew. QuantumWave's trailblazer, the man who scoffed at challenges, now seemed like a warrior after a battle. His once impeccable suit mirrored his state: slightly unkempt. Those electric blue eyes, which often held a challenge, now hid behind a curtain of fatigue. "Sit at my desk, Emily. Turn on the laptop and guide me through our upcoming deliverables," he murmured without shifting a muscle. The double entendre wasn't lost on me, but I quashed the thought. "Mr. Walton, are you alright?" He didn't open his eyes but smirked, "Always observant, aren't we? Enough chit-chat. Bring me up to speed." "But my laptop-" "Use mine," he said, sharing his password. I hesitated for a moment, the weight of trust palpable. Drawing a deep breath, I dove into our project. All the while, I could feel his unwavering gaze, following every move I made, taking in every word I said. Pausing briefly, I said, "You should change your password." His chuckle, even in fatigue, was deep and resonant. "Why? Planning some corporate espionage, Ms.Smith?" I laughed, shaking my head. "It's just protocol." Shutting the laptop, I turned to face him, noting the lines of fatigue etching his face. Without thinking, I added, "Heard you've been MIA since 4 pm. Skipping meals?" His eyes met mine, radiating a softness and depth of gratitude. Rising gracefully from the couch, every step he took closer felt like a melody to the rhythm of my beating heart. As the distance between us dwindled, my breath hitched. Thoughts jumbled in my head: is he going to kiss me? Should I kiss back? Slow or with hunger? The anticipation was overwhelming. Caught off guard, my usual eloquence abandoned me. "I... um, I was... curious?" It sounded more like a question than a statement. The mischievous twinkle was back in his eyes. "And why, Ms. Smith, would my whereabouts concern you?" Blushing fiercely, I stammered, "I-well, it's not like-I mean, everyone's just..." I groaned inwardly. Eloquent Emily had left the building. He leaned in, his breath a warm caress against my ear, "Do you have any idea what I want right now?" His words were a soft seduction, each syllable carrying a tempting allure. I was lost, words escaping me. I stuttered, my words a tangled mess, "I... I don't know how to answer that." His whisper danced along my ear, "Are you certain? Not even a wild guess?" The flirtatious taunt in his tone sent a delightful shiver down my spine, igniting a wildfire within. He pulled back slightly, but his face was still dangerously close, the magnetic pull between us undeniable. His lips hovered tantalizingly near mine as he whispered, with a mischievous glint in his eyes, "I want you..." The pause was an exquisite torture, his face so close, before he continued with a playful smirk, "... to fetch me a chocolate protein bar." The abrupt pivot from a moment brimming with raw emotions to a casual request left me bewildered. Was this a whimsical test to gauge my reactions or a sincere moment of connection masked as a joke? His almost-kiss lingered in the room's electrified atmosphere, intertwining with the playful banter as the reality of his request sunk in. Stepping out of his office, I muttered to myself, "That jerk... he had me thinking he was going to kiss me. So mad. Now I'm walking with my body humming with desires. Thanks a lot ass hole. I fetched his chocolate protein bar, marched back to his desk, laid it down with more force than necessary, and spun on my heels towards the door. Just as I reached the exit, a chuckle echoed through the room. "Is everything alright, Ms. Smith?" he enquired, the laughter in his voice resonating through the tension. Was he seriously asking me that after the emotional rollercoaster he'd just put me on? I wasn't about to play into his hands by reacting. So, with a facade of cool indifference, I shot back, 'Oh, everything's splendid.' His laughter, rich and resonant, trailed me out, but I didn't offer him the satisfaction of a backward glance. I exited his office, the door clicking shut behind me, but his laughter seemed to echo in the rhythm of my heart, which now beat to a tune of whimsy and what-ifs.
