015: Shadows Within

1329 Words

Lyra’s POV. I emerged from the cave with every joint aching, every bruise still burning, every muscle screaming at me to stop. My stomach growled like a warning, and my throat felt raw from thirst. The white wolf of yesterday wasn’t waiting, which I took as either mercy or planning. I didn’t care. I had one goal: get back inside the Academy and remind Killian he couldn’t throw me away. I crept through the underbrush, ears alert, eyes scanning every shadow. Every snapped twig made me flinch. I had to move carefully, silently, like a ghost...except ghosts were apparently better at hiding than I was. My wolf nudged me, grinning in my head. “Step lighter, genius. Or do you want them to see the chaos that is you?” I muttered under my breath, “Funny. I’m thinking the same thing about you.”
