“Where have you been? You ran out of your father and haven't returned since. Do you think you can do whatever you like just because you're over eighteen years old?! So far you stay under our roof, you have to follow our rules!” Mrs Sinclair spat
Anora’s brows pulled together. She wondered how she was able to put up with her mother all those years. Well, good for her. She will no longer stay under her roof, she doesn't need to follow her rules any more!
“I can't return home tonight. I'll come home tomorrow morning”
“Where are you? Are you at a boy's place? Now I see why you refuse to marry Gerald, another man is fooling you. I never knew I raised such a shameless girl. How dare you stay over at another man's house?! I'm sure the man has reached under your skirt, you slut!”
Anora’s frown deepened. Which kind of mother would say such hurtful things to their own daughter?
It wasn't the first time her mother would say hurtful things to her, but it was the first time her mother went to such unexpected extent of calling her a slut
Anora felt pity for herself. Of all the women in the world, God just chose to give a wicked and unreasonable one to her as a mother
“I will never get married to Gerald. I will never be a tool for you and your husband”
“I don't care what you say, get back home right now!”
Anora didn't want to hear any other thing from her mother. She disconnected the call and threw her phone into her pocket
She took a deep breath before going back inside. She met Mr Nelson heading outside. He said he was going home to rest. Anora offered for him to stay at the mansion but he insisted on leaving
She saw him off to his car and watched as the driver drove him off. When she turned back she didn't see Aiden behind her
She had some things to discuss with him, like what to tell his grandfather if he asks the same questions he asked earlier.
She decided to discuss it with him the next morning. It's been a long and tiring day for Anora, she decided to get some sleep
She went to the room next to Aiden’s. Its design was more plain and boring compared to Aiden’s room. There was only a little decor, but it was definitely cozy. She drifted off to sleep almost immediately her head hit the pillow
She woke up the next day to the rays of sunlight, seeping through the curtains and resting on her face
With a loud yawn and an excessive stretch, she opened her eyes.
For a second, she got alarmed forgetting that she wasn't in her room back at home but in a man's house
She thought back to all that happened the previous day as she sat up on the bed. She hadn't had such peaceful sleep in a long while
The bed was so comfortable it could make anyone sleep to their demise
She didn't bother doing anything else, she had to go to her parents’ house. She had an issue to settle!
When she walked outside, she saw some people who weren't there the previous day, mostly females
Some were dusting, some were cleaning, while the others were doing one thing or the other. She immediately guessed they were maids. Anora wondered why they weren't around the previous day
She stopped one of the maids passing by
“Uhm,miss. Do you know if Tristan is around?” Anora asked carefully, unsure of how to address her
“Good morning madam” She bowed her head slightly “Master already left for work”
Anora nodded and dismissed her. As she headed outside the house, all the maids that saw her kept greeting her. At some point, Anora felt shy. She wasn't used to that kind of prestige treatment
Finally, she got outside the house.
“Madam” Terry bowed his head in acknowledgement “Do you want to go somewhere? I can drive you there” He was alone and wasn't with the other two
“No, it's fine. I just need to attend to something. I'll be back as soon as I'm done” Anora replied and left. The distance from the house to the gate was quite a stretch. Even after she got outside the house, she still had to trek further down. There were no cabs around, only private cars
She regretted denying Terry's offer to help. Finally, she got out of the street and found a cab.
As she stood in front of her parent's house, tried to push off all the bad memories muddled in those walls. She took a deep breath, then she entered
As though her mother had been waiting for her the entire night, she yelled at her as soon as she entered
“Why are you just returning? How dare you not listen to me?! I gave you a clear instruction”
“I came as soon as I wanted to. I had other important things to attend to. Why did you call me back here, what do you have to say?” It was as if her marriage to Tristan was a courage boost, she no longer cowered in front of her mother
Her mother seemed to be battling within herself. It was obvious that she wanted to lash out at her, but she held herself down. Then, she dropped her shoulders and drew her lips into a thin line with her brows pulled together
“Anora, I was worried all this time you were away. I thought something happened to you. I said those things out of frustration. I hope you understand, I was just worried, okay?” Mrs Sinclair moved closer to Anora. She wanted to put her hand on Anora but Anora stepped to the side and evaded her touch
Anora looked at her mother with disgust rousing from inside her. She could see right through her facade but she remained silent
“I know we have not been really close, but I am still your mother. And I know best what's right for you. That's why I and your father chose Gerald for you. He's a good man, he's wealthy, and he will take care of you. And he will take care of your family as well. What else can you ask for?” Her mother continued feigning empathy
“I can't get married to that man!” Anora dimmed her eyes and looked fiercely at her mother.
Mrs Sinclair balled her fists. She was trying so hard to stay in character, but Anora was making things difficult
Just then, the door opened and Mr Sinclair entered the house
“Anora, you're back. Where have you been?!”
Anora rolled her eyes, there goes his authoritativeness
Mrs Sinclair ran to her husband. She put her hand on his chest “Honey, I and Anora was just discussing her marriage with Gerald”
“I can't get married to Gerald. Even if I could, I would never. I'd rather die”
“Why are you being so stubborn?!”Her mother broke her character and yelled
“Because I'm already married”
