Chapter 3 — The Den

Chapter 3 — The Den The rain finally stopped just before sunrise. Boston looked worse in daylight. Smoke rose from burning buildings across Amari County. Storefronts had been destroyed overnight. Abandoned police barricades blocked intersections while military trucks rolled slowly through empty streets. Nobody trusted the daylight anymore. Not after the eclipse. The sky stayed dark gray even during morning hours, with the red ring of the eclipse still visible behind thick clouds. It felt like the sun itself had abandoned the city. And somewhere beneath the streets of Boston, four monsters sat in silence. The abandoned warehouse smelled like rust, oil, and wet concrete. Marcus had found it near the old industrial district while they were hiding from ACPD patrols. The upper floor had collapsed years ago, leaving the place mostly forgotten. Graffiti covered every wall. Broken machinery sat untouched beneath hanging chains and flickering lights. But the important part was underground. Hidden beneath loose metal flooring was an old smuggling tunnel connected to a massive basement storage area. The boys now sat inside it. Nobody had spoken for almost ten minutes. Tony leaned against a wall with his arms crossed while Marcus paced back and forth. Omar stayed hidden in the darkest corner of the room. Darnell sat on an old couch staring at his claws. Every few seconds, his eyes glowed again. “Alright,” Tony finally said. “We gotta talk about this.” Marcus stopped pacing. “About WHICH part?” Tony pointed at himself. “THIS part!” He stood up and spread his arms wide. “We got powers.” Marcus sighed. “Yes.” “We got fur.” “…yes.” “We got glowing eyes.” “…yes.” Tony pointed toward Omar. “THIS MAN DISAPPEARED.” Omar shrugged from the shadows. Marcus rubbed his forehead again. “We know.” Tony sat back down hard. “Man hell nah.” Darnell stayed quiet. His mind kept replaying the same thing. The mirror. The wolf staring back at him. He could still feel the pain in his bones. Still hear the screams. Still feel something alive inside him. Something dangerous. Marcus noticed him zoning out. “Darnell.” No response. “Darnell.” Darnell finally looked up. “You good?” Darnell nodded slowly. “Yeah.” Tony immediately called it out. “That was a fake ‘yeah.’” Marcus sat across from Darnell. “What’s going on?” Darnell hesitated. Then he finally spoke. “When we fought those Bloodangels…” The room stayed quiet. “I liked it.” Nobody answered immediately. Darnell looked down at his hands. “When I hit that dude…” he said quietly. “For a second it felt…” He stopped himself. Tony leaned forward. “Felt what?” Darnell looked uncomfortable even admitting it. “Natural.” Silence. Then Omar finally spoke. “That’s the wolf.” Everybody looked toward him. Omar stepped slightly into the light. His purple eyes still glowed faintly. “The anger,” Omar said. “The instincts. The violence.” Marcus crossed his arms. “How would you know?” Omar looked down at his own hands. “Because I feel it too.” Tony laughed nervously. “Oh that’s GREAT.” Marcus sat back thinking. “So the eclipse energy didn’t just mutate us physically.” Darnell looked at him. “What you mean?” Marcus started pacing again. “Our senses are stronger. Our strength is enhanced. But mentally…” He pointed at his head. “Something changed in our brains too.” Tony looked annoyed. “Man talk normal.” Marcus sighed. “The wolf DNA merged with us.” Everybody went quiet again. Darnell looked around the basement. “So what now?” Nobody had an answer. Then suddenly— BANG. Everyone jumped up instantly. Another loud slam echoed from above. Tony’s claws extended automatically. Marcus’ hands glowed blue. Omar vanished into darkness. Darnell stepped toward the stairs. Another crash. Then footsteps. Heavy. Human. Tony growled. “ACPD?” Omar’s voice echoed from the shadows. “No.” Darnell slowly climbed the basement stairs. The others followed carefully behind him. The warehouse above stayed mostly dark except for weak light pushing through broken windows. Then they saw him. Max. He stood near the warehouse entrance holding a metal pipe while looking around nervously. “What the hell…” Max whispered. Darnell froze. Max looked up. For a second neither of them moved. Then Max’s eyes widened. “…Darnell?” Tony immediately whispered: “Oh this bad.” Max slowly backed away. “What the HELL happened to y’all?!” Marcus raised both hands. “Relax.” “RELAX?!” Max pointed at them. “Y’all look like damn monsters!” Tony looked offended. “Damn.” Omar appeared beside Max from the shadows. Max screamed loud enough to echo through the warehouse. “YO!” Omar blinked. “My bad.” Max nearly fell over trying to back up. Darnell stepped forward carefully. “Max.” Max stared at him. Even with the claws, glowing eyes, and fur, he recognized his best friend’s voice. “What happened to you?” Darnell looked away. “…we don’t fully know.” Max looked around at all four of them. “This got something to do with that explosion last night?” Marcus nodded slowly. Max rubbed both hands over his face. “Ain’t no way.” Tony pointed at him. “See? THAT’S what we said.” Max paced in circles trying to process everything. “This city already got gangs, riots, soldiers, magic psychopaths…” He pointed at them again. “NOW WEREWOLVES?!” Nobody corrected him this time. Max finally stopped pacing. “So what y’all gonna do?” Darnell answered honestly. “We don’t know.” Max looked around the warehouse. Then back at Darnell. “You can stay here for now.” Tony blinked. “That easy?” Max shrugged nervously. “I mean… if I tell ACPD they probably shoot y’all on sight.” Marcus nodded slowly. “Fair point.” Max looked directly at Darnell. “But if y’all start killing people or some crazy s**t…” Tony interrupted. “Damn, you think we villains?” Max looked at Tony’s glowing eyes. “…I don’t KNOW what y’all are.” That hit harder than anybody expected. Because honestly— neither did they. Suddenly Marcus froze. His head turned toward the city. “What?” Marcus narrowed his eyes. “You hear that?” Everyone listened. At first— nothing. Then Darnell heard it too. Screaming. Far away. Multiple people. Tony stood up instantly. “That ain’t normal screaming.” Omar disappeared into shadow again. Marcus moved toward the broken windows. Down the street, smoke rose into the sky. Gunfire echoed through nearby buildings. And above the rooftops— purple fire. Darnell’s eyes narrowed. “Shadow Fang.” Max looked horrified. “You serious?” Tony cracked his knuckles. “Oh yeah.” Darnell looked at the others. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Marcus said it. “We can’t ignore it.” Tony grinned. “Finally.” Omar stepped from the shadows. “We fight together.” Darnell looked at all three of them. Something clicked in that moment. Not just friendship. Not just survival. Something deeper. Brotherhood. The wolf inside him growled softly. Not from anger. From loyalty. Darnell slowly held out his fist. One by one, the others joined. Tony. Marcus. Omar. Four fists together beneath the dim warehouse light. Darnell looked at them. “No matter what happens…” Tony smirked. “We the Pack.” Marcus nodded. “Together.” Omar’s glowing eyes narrowed. “Always.” Darnell tightened his fist. “The city thinks darkness owns Boston.” Outside, thunder rolled across the skyline. Darnell’s eyes glowed bright magenta. “Let’s prove them wrong.” Above the city, the eclipse burned. And deep inside the shadows of Boston— The Pack was born.
