Echoes in the vineyard

340 Words
The Tuscan sun dipped low, casting golden light across the sprawling vineyard they now called sanctuary. Rows of grapevines stretched like soldiers standing guard, shielding the rustic villa nestled at the edge of a hill. From a distance, it looked like paradise. But inside Elena’s chest, the storm hadn’t passed. She stood barefoot on the terrace, Luca behind her, his arms wrapped loosely around her waist. His warmth was grounding, his silence comforting. They hadn’t spoken much since leaving the island. The flash drive sat locked in a safe beneath the floorboards—too dangerous to touch, too powerful to ignore. “Elena,” Luca said softly, his breath brushing her ear. “You haven’t asked me why I stayed.” She leaned back against him. “I didn’t have to.” He turned her gently, hands settling on her hips. “I stayed because you didn’t run when you could’ve. Because when everything exploded around you, you chose fire over fear.” She met his gaze, vulnerability flickering beneath the strength in her eyes. “I don’t know who I am without the lies I was raised in.” “You’re becoming her now,” he murmured. “One choice at a time.” Suddenly, a loud crack echoed from the edge of the vineyard. They froze. Elena’s heart stuttered. Luca moved instinctively, pulling her behind him as he scanned the horizon. Another crack—closer this time. It wasn’t gunfire. It was the security alarm. Triggered. “We’re not alone,” he muttered. She ran inside, grabbed the flash drive and the burner phone Matteo had left. Luca met her at the door, already armed, his expression stone. “This place isn’t safe anymore,” he said. “No place is,” she replied. They jumped into the Jeep, dust rising as they sped down the dirt path, the vineyard fading in the rearview mirror like another illusion burned away. Elena clutched the flash drive tightly. This time, she wouldn’t run to hide. She would run to fight.
