The Edge Of Truth

313 Words
They didn’t sleep. The fire in the ruined tower hissed against the damp air, casting shadows that danced across the walls like ghosts of what had been lost. Elena sat with her knees pulled to her chest, the flash drive clutched tightly, while Luca paced in quiet circles — like a wolf caged by decisions. “I think it’s time,” she finally whispered. Luca turned. “Time for what?” “To stop running. We find out what’s on this drive... and we end this.” He looked at her — not just the woman he had fallen for, but the storm she carried. “You don’t even know what it could mean, Elena. Once we open it, there’s no going back.” She stood, closing the distance between them. “There’s already no going back.” They used Luca’s encrypted laptop, and the moment the drive unlocked, the screen filled with files — names, bank accounts, offshore holdings... and government contracts. Elena’s heart sank. It wasn’t just about stolen money or her father’s empire. This was betrayal buried in blood money. This was why people were dying. Luca scanned the data, face paling. “These contracts… they’re connected to the military. Arms deals. Biological research. And your father’s name is all over them.” Elena’s stomach turned. “My whole life… has been built on this.” “And now,” Luca said quietly, “you have to decide what to do with the truth.” She closed the laptop slowly. “First, we survive. Then, we expose them all.” From the cliffside tower, the city lights below shimmered like a dream they could no longer afford. But in Elena’s eyes, something else began to burn — not fear, not grief… *resolve*. Tomorrow, the world would start to crumble. And she would be the one to light the first match.
