chapter 2 ( ember and ash)

The silver flash wasn't a warning; it was a detonation. Kael, the Hoodie, moved with a fluid, terrifying grace that belied the casual slouch of his apparel. The silver light coalesced not into a projectile, but a temporary shield that shimmered a foot from his chest, deflecting the energy bolt Ember had fired. Her bullet, normally capable of vaporizing steel, splashed harmlessly against the defensive construct. Fast, Ember thought, dropping into a deeper crouch. And not afraid to use power. She didn't waste time on a second shot. She channeled her true magic—the raw, obsidian darkness she normally kept tightly bound. She slammed her hand against the concrete, and the shadows already pooled beneath the air conditioning units instantly deepened, hardening into three razor-sharp darts. They shot towards Kael, silent and faster than any human could track. Kael didn't bother with a shield this time. He moved with a dancer's twitch, dodging the first two, but the third forced him to act. The air around his right hand flared, and a ribbon of pure, vibrant light—a silver fire that emitted no heat, only blinding luminescence—coiled around the shadow-dart. The moment the light touched the shadow, they didn't just meet; they canceled each other out. A shockwave of neutralized energy erupted, smelling faintly of clean-washed glass and static electricity, loud enough to ring in Ember's ears. "You're making a lot of noise for a Ghost," Kael murmured, his voice cutting clearly through the retreating echo. He took a predatory step closer. "And that's not just basic Guild Defense magic. That's messy." Yours is just flashy," Ember countered, already retreating, pulling the shadows of the rooftop fixtures towards her. She didn't want a stand-up fight; she wanted to disappear and complete her mission. She focused on a massive water tower twenty feet away. In an instant, the structure’s shadow stretched, distorting the reality of the rooftop, offering a single, perfect seam of pure darkness. The Shadow-Skip. A maneuver too costly in power, too risky in exposure, but necessary now. She pushed off, throwing herself into the distorted shadow. Her plan was to emerge instantly on the roof of the adjacent Solis tower, but Kael was already anticipating her exit. Before she could fully dissolve, Kael unleashed his power in a way that truly shocked her. He didn’t use his defensive light. He used fire. It wasn't normal fire. It was Lunar Fire—a roaring torrent of blue-white, ice-hot flame that ripped across the rooftop, targeted not at her body, but at the shadow she was using. He was trying to burn the very concept of her hiding place. The Lunar Fire hit the shadow-seam, and Ember felt a searing, agonizing pain—not heat, but the violent expulsion of her own magic. She was hurled backward, landing in a painful, skidding heap against the raised edge of the rooftop. Her mask slammed against the stone. It didn't crack, but the jarring impact was enough to briefly sever her focus. He uses Lunar Fire. He's Lunaris's top operative. The revelation was a cold weight in her stomach. Kael stood over her, his hands still glowing with the residue of the silver flames, his hoodie pulled back just enough that Ember could see the sharp line of his jaw and a sliver of intense, focused blue eyes. "That's enough," Kael stated, his tone shifting from playful challenge to cold authority. "Your magic is volatile, Ghost. It's time for the guilds to find out why you've been hiding it." He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't need one. He raised his hands, and the residual silver power in the air began to condense, forming a tight, shimmering silver cage around Ember. She gritted her teeth. The rage was back, hotter than any Lunar Fire. He wouldn't take her. Not tonight. Not ever. Ignoring the pain in her side, Ember surged forward, not away, but towards him, knowing that the cage couldn't close if she was inside his guard. She unleashed every ounce of shadow magic she had left, not to fight, but to create a blinding, pitch-black smokescreen right at his feet.
