The Historian's Clues

1006 Words
Emma showed some courage and invited the stranger inside, curiosity burning deep in her bones. Will curiosity kill the cat? She was about to uncover. The room was cast in an eerie glow from the table's softly flickering lamp. Emma, Sarah, and Michael sat huddled around the table, the faded photograph of the desk in front of them. The photograph was worn, its edges frayed, but the image was clear - the antique desk, standing tall in a room with ornate wallpaper and antique furnishings. Michael's voice carried a tone of urgency as he explained, "I am a historian and I work in the library's archive. My family has lived in Harbor Haven for generations, and we've always passed down stories, tales of hidden truths in this town, but I have to warn you though there are some Secrets that some would go to great lengths to protect." Emma glanced at the photograph again, her fingers tracing the edges of the desk in the image lost in thoughts of her own. The desk she saw in that antique shop, the desk that gave her such a strong sense of purpose, though undoubtedly similar with the one in the picture, had subtle differences - the carvings were intricate, yet slightly varied from the desk in the photograph. "This desk, it's different from the one I found at The Antique treasures. Do you know where this room is?" She asked Michael Michael leaned in closer, studying the photograph intently. His eyes, a deep shade of blue, held a mixture of determination and worry. "I've seen this room before, in old family albums. It's in the mansion that once belonged to the Thornton family. A mansion that's been abandoned for years, hidden away on the outskirts of town. The one you have heard ghost stories about." Sarah's eyes widened. "The Thornton family? They were one of the most prominent families in Harbor Haven's history. They were royals. What's the connection between them and these love letters? Is this related to some princess scandal? Or something about difference in status I wonder" Michael nodded thoughtfully. "That's what we need to find out. But you must be careful. Not everyone in Harbor Haven wants these secrets brought to light, afterall these secrets might cause quite a havoc if someone found out. There are those who will do anything to protect the town's reputation." Emma couldn't help but shiver. The antique desk and its hidden love letters suddenly felt like they were leading them into a sea of deadly storms. "Thank you for the warning, Michael. We'll be as careful as we can." With that cryptic message hanging in the air, the trio spent hours discussing their next steps. As the three of them talked, Michael who earlier wanted nothing more than not to be involved in this and just wanted to warn others, was becoming more and more engrossed in the investigation. Finally at one point, he because so invested that, he offered to guide them through the town's historical archives, convinced that they might find more clues there. Emma and Sarah agreed, their determination undiminished by the growing sense of danger surrounding their investigation. Afterall, to uncover the past one must face some dangers right? As the night grew darker and the lamp's flame danced erratically, casting long shadows around the room, Michael stood up, ready to leave. "I'll meet you both at the library tomorrow morning. We'll start digging into the archives then." Emma and Sarah exchanged nods of agreement. "Thank you, Michael for warning us about the potential threats," Emma said sincerely. "We appreciate your help." With a final nod, Michael made his way to the door and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway. He glanced back at Emma and Sarah, his expression filled with a mixture of determination and unease. He looked at his new friends once again and in this cautious and urgent tone said "Remember to be alert at all times while investigating and stay safe and carefull." Upon hearing this, Emma and Sarah looked at each other and nodded, as they door closed behind him, the two friends were left in the quiet room, the antique desk's lamp casting long shadows on the walls. Sarah shivered, breaking the silence. "That was intense, Em. Michael's got us on high alert. Although, I must say I find this very weird. Like how did he find us? How does he know where you live? We have to be really careful around him too Em, what if he is one of those people who don't want us finding out the truth?" Emma nodded, her mind racing with thoughts of the mysteries that lay ahead. "I have a feeling this investigation is going to lead us to some dark places, Sarah. I admit i find this quite odd too. But we can't turn back now. We have no choice but to trust this giy right now, although i do agree with you, we must be carefull around him." The night was filled with a sense of unease, but also a growing excitement about the adventure that awaited them. Emma and Sarah knew that they were on the cusp of uncovering secrets that had been hidden away for decades. Just as they were about to prepare for bed, a sudden gust of wind rattled the windowpanes, causing them both to jump. Emma hurried to the window and peered outside, her heart pounding. In the moonlit darkness, she thought she saw a figure standing in the distance, partially concealed by the shadows. It was too far away to make out any details, but the sense of being watched sent a shiver down her spine. "Em, what is it?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling. Emma turned back to her friend, her eyes wide with uncertainty. "I think... I think someone was watching us, Sarah." As Sarah joined her at the window, they gazed into the night, but the mysterious figure had vanished, leaving nothing but an unsettling feeling in its wake.
