Memories

300 Words
Ella’s mind drifted as she stared out the hospital window, the distant hum of the city below filling the silence. Lauren was by her side again, silent as ever, his presence both a comfort and a mystery. Fragments of the past began to surface—memories of high school, of long nights spent studying, laughing, talking. Of Lauren always being there, her constant, her anchor. She remembered the way he had looked at her, with a mix of affection and something more. Something unspoken. But now, everything feels different. Unsettled. “I remember... the bus,” Ella murmured, her voice weak. Lauren shifted beside her, his gaze sharp. “Bus?” he asked, his voice tight. She nodded, her eyes narrowing as she tried to recall the details. It was fuzzy, but she could see it—herself hanging onto the door of the bus, swaying with the motion as it lurched forward. Lauren had been there, always nearby, always watching. “You remember that?” he asked, his voice carefully neutral. Ella hesitated. There’s something he’s not telling me. She had always trusted Lauren, but now, that trust wavered. Her mind replayed moments of their past, searching for clues, for cracks in the foundation of their friendship. “I think... I think something happened,” she whispered, her heart pounding. “Something more than just the accident.” Lauren stiffened. His jaw clenched, and for the first time, Ella saw a flicker of something in his eyes—fear, or was it regret? “Don’t push yourself too hard, Ella,” he said, his voice soft but firm. “Focus on recovering. That’s what matters.” But Ella couldn’t shake the feeling that something vital was just beyond her reach, buried beneath the surface of her broken memories.
