Chapter 6: The Council’s Decree

425 Words
Jaxon’s POV We were out of time. The moment that howl shattered the air, I knew the Council was coming. Not next week. Now. And if they saw the mark on her wrist… if they saw what she did to me with that pulse of light… they’d either cage her or kill her. My body still ached from the blast she released. But the pain was nothing compared to the fear growing inside me—because I knew what that mark meant. It wasn’t just a mate bond. It was the bond. The Bloodline of the First Alpha had been broken for centuries. Buried. Extinct. That power wasn’t supposed to return. Until her. Alina sat on the forest floor, hugging her knees, eyes wide with shock. She hadn’t said a word since the Council’s voice echoed through the trees. She didn’t have to—I could feel everything she was feeling. Confusion. Fear. And something else, too. Power. She was awakening. Fast. “They’re coming for me,” she whispered. I nodded once. “But they’re not taking you.” ⸻ We didn’t go back to the house. It wasn’t safe. Not with the Council’s spies lurking. Not with Alec acting strange and the others sniffing out weakness. Instead, I led her to the Old Clearing. The sacred place where bloodlines were tested… and fates decided. The full moon was rising as we reached the center. “You have to hide the mark,” I told her. “If they see it, if they sense what you are—” A rustle cut me off. And then… they appeared. Four figures in black cloaks. Each one marked with the sigil of an Alpha House. None of them smiled. None of them blinked. The one in front stepped forward. “Jaxon Thorn,” the elder rasped. “And the girl… Alina.” He said her name like it tasted wrong. “By decree of the Council, she must be tested.” “No,” I growled, stepping in front of her. “She’s under my protection.” “Then you will face the Rite of Judgment alongside her.” Alina’s voice was barely a whisper. “What’s the Rite?” I turned to her, heart sinking. “It’s how they decide if you’re strong enough to live.” The elder raised his hand—and the earth split open in front of us. From the shadows below, dozens of glowing eyes emerged… and a familiar voice hissed from the dark: “Let the trial begin.”
