Chapter Fifteen The heavy gates of the Settlement’s river entrance took a long time to open, leaving Feather to wonder whether there were any guards on duty at all. In the minutes he had to think about it, he realised just how many settlers had followed Valkirra to Newkeep. Perhaps as many as a third, so that the Settlement itself was now shorthanded. Maybe that might help explain the closure of the gates. If they had not enough guards to stand duty at the openings, it would be wise to keep the place shut tight. Wise if you happened to think like settlers, that is, that palisades and fences and gates and walls would keep you safe.
