Days went on. I tried to avoid him as best I could and focus on my studies. I did want to get that degree in the bag after all. But how could I avoid him? I had to be in the same class as him. He would try to come to class earlier just to sit next to me. Valentine's Day came; I didn’t buy a gift for him because I didn’t expect anything from him either. Given the fact that our relationship was slowly going downhill. I also had a test the following day. So, I gave zero regard to which day it was then.
I was in my dorm room studying for my biology test when I heard a knock on the door. I even shut myself off from paying much attention to my phone. I did not want to attract the green-eyed monster. I concentrated on what was important. Passing the test. I opened the door and guess who was on the other side. Mr Right.
We exchanged casual greetings. I made sure not to keep eye contact. I couldn’t look him in his eyes. The shame in me was too much. I also felt confused, I thought we were fighting. We had not been talking for a few days. But his approach was swift. He had brought me gifts. They were so beautiful. Flowers, cheesy cards and chocolates. I didn’t know how to react. I didn’t know if I should be happy or guilty for not making an effort.
I asked him to leave so I could study. He did without protesting. I was so happy I posted the gifts. I failed to mention they were from him. He saw the status and didn’t comment like he usually does. It must have upset him that I didn’t acknowledge him, thereby extension him too. I was so disappointed. I realized my mistake too late, lost my concentration. Lost my motivation to study and failed that test.
