DECISION
Her first instinct was to hit the replay button to hear that voice again. Instead, she hit the redial button. There came the dreaded three-note tone, and a woman’s voice answered the call.
“We’re sorry, but the number you are trying to reach is not a working number. Please try again—”
“What do you mean it’s not a working number?” Dane shouted back at the phone.
What do you mean it’s not a working number?She tried to call it a second time but got the same results. Frustrated, she listened again to the two two-second messages.
“Hello, Dane.”
“Hello, Dane.”“I am Fluffy.”
“I am Fluffy.”She frowned. Something about the tone. The inflections.
She played them a third time.
“Hello, Dane.”
“Hello, Dane.”“I am Fluffy.”
“I am Fluffy.”“That’s not a real person. It sounds robotic,”
