THE TRUTH?

1146 Words
The deafening boom shocked both Vivian and her mother, as even the crying woman sat up from her chair and turned around in shock. With slightly trembling hands, Vivian took a quick glance behind her and realized what the explosion was. The black car following them had just exploded into flames. Vivian was about to release a sigh of relief when the shock wave from the explosion reached them and rocked her car. The shock from the explosion shook their car, causing Vivian to lose control of the steering wheel and ultimately the car. The car started spinning and Vivian quickly tried to wrestle back control of the steering wheel, but she failed. It was only when the car crashed into a sidewalk that it stopped. Rose screamed as she ducked again. Vivian’s heart was pounding deep in her chest as she steadied her mother’s car and looked back at the scene of the explosion. The car was completely covered in flames. “They are dead, right?” Rose asked, pointing towards the burning car with red eyes. “I think so.” Vivian muttered under her breath. “What the hell was that, Vivian?” Rose asked, Vivian did not answer her mom. Her hands were still locked on the wheel. She knew that if she removed her hand from the steering wheel then they would start shaking. She peeled her eyes away from the scene of destruction in front of her and searched the car looking for her phone. She found her phone on the floor. It had been thrown there when the shock wave of the explosion had hit the car. “Are you there Marcus, was that your men?” Vivian asked as she picked up the cell phone, “Yes, it was my men. I promised to keep you safe, Vivian, and I always keep my promises.” Marcus replied, “You are no longer being tailed, meet me in the park.” He ordered before cutting off the call. Vivian tightened her grip on the steering wheel, took one final glance at the burning car, turned back her gaze to the road and floored the gas pedal. *** About twenty minutes later, Vivian drove into the parking lot of one of the oldest nature parks in the city. This park was famous for being centuries old. Because of that and the fact that the city no longer cared about the park, it was usually deserted. It was so deserted that the only car that Vivian could see in the parking lot was the car that she knew belonged to Marcus. Vivian parked her mother’s car beside Marcus’ car before turning to her mother. “Just stay here, mom.” She whispered, “I will be back soon.” “No Vivian,” Rose said as she reached out to grab Vivian’s hand. “Please just tell me what is going on.” “I don’t know yet, mom,” Vivian replied, her voice tight and tired, “But I am going to find out. Just lock the door and wait for me. I will be back,” she assured her. Rose hesitated; Her hand was still clasped tightly to the hands of her daughter, but when she saw the look on Vivian’s face, she relented and released her hand. “Just be safe,” Rose answered with a sigh. “I will, mom.” Vivian said as she opened her car door and stepped out. Vivian had already spotted Marcus sitting on a park bench, so she immediately started walking towards him. “You took your sweet time, my dear Vivian,” Marcus said. He was relaxing on the bench with a cigarette held expertly between his fingers. “I had a freaking bomb blow up the car behind me, what the hell did you expect me to do?” Vivian snapped back, “Excuse me if I did not rush here like a f*****g psychopath.” “Hey, don’t bite off my head.” Marcus snapped back. He took a deep breath to calm himself before looking away from Vivian and towards Rose in the car. “Are both of you okay?” He asked. “Yeah, we are, bruised maybe, but nothing serious.” Vivian answered, “Good. Please sit,” Marcus said as he patted the spot on the bench besides him. “What the hell was that Marcus?” Vivian asked the moment she took her seat. “Why the hell are people after my life?” “Have you ever heard of a man named Lucien Drake?” Marcus said as he leaned forward, “The mafia lord?” Vivian asked in a puzzled tone. “Of course I have heard of him.” “He is the one who sent those men.” Marcus replied, “And those men were not sent for you, they were sent for your husband.” “Damien?” Vivian asked as her stomach turned, “What does that bastard have to do with all of this?” “Everything,” Marcus answered, “Your husband, Damien, is not just a real estate agent like he claims, he works for Drake.” “What?” Vivian froze, her mind racing as she tried to think of the implications of what she had just heard. “Not only is your husband working for him, so is your twin sister Vicky.” Marcus dropped another bombshell on Vivian. “What.. What are they doing for him?” Vivian asked in a stutter. She was sure that she was going to regret asking, but she needed to know. “All sorts of shady deals. Your husband is Drake’s biggest money cleaner in the country. They are both in deep with the Drake mafia.” Marcus continued, “Why are they coming after me then?” Vivian asked, “Why else Vivian?” Marcus asked with a raised eyebrow. “They think I know something?” Vivian realized. Her voice was now barely above a whisper. “Exactly,” Marcus nodded, “I do not know the exact reason why he wants you dead. But I suspect that when Drake heard about our meeting last night, he thought I had informed you about all of their business.” “So, he decided to kill me?” Vivian asked as the weight of the situation she had got herself in started sinking into her. “Yes,” “What am I supposed to do now?” Vivian asked as she leaned back in her chair and turned towards Marcus. “Do I have to keep running for the rest of my life?” “Of course not, Vivian,” Marcus replied with a large grin on his face. “What else can we do when we face a tough situation? We fight back.”
