Ethan sat across from his father in the expansive office at the company’s headquarters, sunlight streaming through the towering glass windows behind him. The air was heavy with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and tension. Ethan had carefully rehearsed what he was about to say, but now, face-to-face with the Chairman of Blake Industries, his words seemed far too small for the gravity of the situation.
“Father, we need to talk about Logan,” Ethan started, his voice low but firm.
Ethan’s father, Gregory Blake didn’t look up from his papers immediately. When he finally did, his piercing gaze met Ethan’s. “What about him? Logan is one of the brightest minds we have. He’s married to your sister, which makes him family now. What’s the issue?”
Ethan shifted uncomfortably. “That’s exactly the problem. You’ve taken a liking to him, and it feels like he’s being groomed for something… more.” Ethan’s chest tightened as he spoke, his words laden with the jealousy he struggled to contain. “He’s a threat. He could—”
“Replace you?” his father cut in, raising an eyebrow. “Ridiculous!”
Ethan clenched his fists beneath the table. “But his past with Samantha could cause problems. They have… unresolved issues, and it’s bound to affect their working relationship. I’m not asking for him to be gone, just reassigned.”
Gregory Blake leaned back in his chair, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “You’re overthinking this. Samantha is professional enough to handle herself, and Logan wouldn’t jeopardize his position over personal history.”
Ethan remained silent, knowing his father wouldn’t budge. But as the meeting ended, a simmering frustration brewed within him. Logan was a threat not just to his professional role but also to his carefully constructed world.
Ethan’s mind raced as he drove back to the branch office, his father’s words echoing in his head. Logan is family now. It was clear that Logan had cemented himself in the company, and worse, in his father’s good graces. As much as Ethan tried to push away the frustration, it bubbled beneath the surface.
By the time he reached the office, the day was in full swing. Through the glass walls of the conference room, he saw Samantha standing at the front, addressing the team about the project’s early stages. Her words were calm and confident, but the sight of her stirred a different feeling in Ethan. He pushed the door open, walking in without so much as a knock, his frustration from the earlier meeting still fresh.
The room stilled as he entered, all eyes shifting between him and Samantha. She faltered for a second before continuing with her presentation, but Ethan wasn’t interested in the details of the project at that moment.
“Where’s your ex-husband?” Ethan’s voice sliced through the air, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
The awkward silence that followed felt unbearable. Samantha’s face paled, the cool professionalism she had just displayed crumbling. Her eyes darted nervously, and she wished for the ground to swallow her whole. Why would he ask that, and in front of everyone?
Chris, noticing the tension, quickly jumped in, clearing his throat. “Logan’s off-site, getting some approvals from the government for one of the AI specs.” His tone was casual, trying to ease the tension. “He’ll be back later.”
Ethan stared at Chris for a moment before turning on his heels, leaving without another word. The room remained tense as everyone avoided looking at Samantha, who stood rigid at the front of the room, feeling exposed and humiliated. She could barely concentrate on the rest of the meeting, her mind too caught up in Ethan’s outburst.
Later, after the meeting ended, Samantha made her way to Ethan’s office. She didn’t bother knocking, storming in, her face flushed with anger. “What the hell was that?” she demanded, her voice trembling as she tried to keep her composure.
Ethan looked up from his desk, his eyebrows raised as if he didn’t know what she was talking about.
“In front of everyone? You had no right to ask me about Logan like that. You think there’s something going on, but there isn’t.” She crossed her arms defensively. “I don’t owe you any explanations, but just so you know, whatever happened between Logan and me is in the past. I’m not letting it affect my work.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, his anger simmering again. “This is my building, and I’m responsible for ensuring the team functions without… distractions. He is a distraction to you.”
Samantha’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t try to turn this around on me. You’re the one making it a problem.”
They stared each other down, the tension between them thick. Before either could say anything more, Samantha shook her head and turned to leave. “Don’t bring it up again, Ethan. I can handle my work.”

Later in the day, as the team gathered for another meeting, the atmosphere was heavy with what had transpired. Logan had returned, and while he remained professional, there was a noticeable distance between him and Samantha. The project details were hashed out, and once the meeting ended, Chris leaned back in his chair with a grin.
“You know what we need?” Chris said, standing up. “A break. How about dinner downtown? We could all use some fun after today’s… excitement.”
Samantha and Logan exchanged glances, both hesitant. “I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Samantha mumbled, already overwhelmed by the day’s events.
Logan nodded in agreement. “There’s still work to be done.”
“Oh, come on, it’ll be fun!” Maya chimed in, nudging them both. “It’s just dinner. We could all use a little stress relief.”
Chris grinned wider. “Yeah, exactly. Just a couple of hours, and we’ll be back to it tomorrow.”
Samantha sighed, finally giving in. “Fine. But just for a little while.”
Logan hesitated, but Chris and Maya’s insistence finally wore him down. “Alright, let’s do it,” he agreed reluctantly.
As the group—Samantha, Logan, Chris, Maya, and a couple of other colleagues—gathered in the lobby and made their way to their cars, they were unaware of the eyes that followed them. David Crane, Ethan’s secretary, sat in his own vehicle across the street, his hands drumming lightly against the steering wheel as he watched them with interest.
Without a second thought, David started his car and trailed behind them discreetly. His instructions had been clear: keep an eye on Logan, and if anything suspicious came up, report back to Ethan. Tonight’s dinner might just offer something useful.
