Maya’s Pov
A freezing cold shiver ran down my spine and the tiny hairs on my arms stood straight up.
Something else was here with me.
A very soft rustling sound came from the flowers right next to my head. It was a smooth, sliding noise.
Sssshhh. Sssshhh.
I slowly turned my head, completely terrified of what I would see.
Rising slowly from the center of the flowers was a snake that didn’t look like any normal animal I had ever seen in the woods. It was incredibly thick. In fact, it was as wide as my own arm and its scales were not plain brown or green, they were red.
Its eyes were gold. They had thin black slits for pupils… I held my breath and didn’t dare move an inch.
The serpent stared right at me and tilted its head slowly. Then, it opened its mouth and struck forward.
The snake’s long fangs sank deep into the soft skin of my left wrist.
I cried out very loudly in sudden shock and intense pain, pulling my arm back quickly. The snake let go immediately and slid backward smoothly into the flowers.
I grabbed my wrist tightly with my right hand… Two small puncture wounds leaked a tiny drop of dark red blood. I waited for the terrible numbness of poison to hit my heart.
I waited to die for the second time.
I closed my eyes tightly and waited for the end.
But that didn’t happen.
Instead, a spark of extreme, burning heat started right at the bite mark. It felt like someone had injected boiling hot water directly into my veins.
What the actual f**k??
I looked down at my wrist in shock, the veins under my skin were glowing with golden light.
What… what is this?
I slumped back against the trunk of an oak tree. I could not move my legs anymore and the heat made my whole body feel heavy and sleepy. I just wanted to close my eyes and I just wanted to sleep right there…
Crunch. Snap.
Heavy boots hit the dirt nearby, breaking dry branches loudly.
Through my blurry vision, I saw dark shadows stepping out from the trees.
“Well, well. Look exactly what we have here.” It was Kane.
He stepped confidently into the small clearing. He was tightly holding a long, sharp silver blade in his right hand. Behind him, five of his largest wolves stepped out of the shadows and they were growling very low in their throats.
Kane looked down at me with disgust as he saw my chest rising and falling very slowly and the cold sweat pouring down my pale face. He noticed I couldn’t stand up at all.
“You really thought you could embarrass me in front of my entire pack and just run away??” Kane laughed.
“You are absolutely nothing, Maya. You are a weak little servant. You belong to me entirely! And since you want to die in the dirt so badly, I will gladly give you your wish.”
He didn’t know anything about my first life… He didn’t know he already killed me once before but his horrible words still stung deeply. He slowly raised the blade high, aiming it right for my chest.
I wanted to speak… I wanted to tell him to go straight to hell! But my tongue felt way too heavy so I could only glare up at him with hatred.
“Any last words, stray?” Kane asked, mocking me openly. “Maybe you want to beg for mercy?? Maybe if you beg loudly, I will make it quick.”
“Go to hell” I said forcing the words out of my dry throat.
Kane sneered angrily. “Wrong answer, bitch.” Kane took one confident step closer. He was ready to swing the blade down.
Then, the temperature in the forest dropped instantly below freezing
Kane stopped walking, frowning deeply while his five large wolves stopped growling and started to whine.
Then white mist rolled out from the deep parts of the woods, covering the bed of flowers completely then slowly crawled right up to Kane’s boots.
Out of the mist, a massive shadow suddenly appeared.
It was a wolf, but it was far too big to be normal… It was massive and stood as tall as a full-grown horse while its thick fur was pitch black.
To the left of the black wolf, another giant shadow stepped forward into the light…This one was covered in messy, golden-blonde fur and it let out a snarl that made Kane’s strong men whimper out loud in terror.
To the right, a third giant wolf appeared. It had rich, beautiful brown fur and green eyes and it moved with a calm and silent grace.
Kane’s face went pale as the blade shook in his hand. He was an Alpha, but next to these three giant beasts, he looked like a scared little pup.
“Who are you?? This is Silver Moon territory!” Kane shouted, but his voice cracked. He was lying, and everyone knew we were far past his borders.
The black wolf took a step forward, placing its body directly between me and Kane’s blade as he looked down at him in disgust.
“Get out of my way,” Kane shouted. “This girl belongs to me. She is a criminal, and I am taking her back to face justice.”
The black wolf didn’t move an inch, just stared at him coldly.
“I am an Alpha!” Kane yelled. “I command you to move!”
Then, the black wolf began to change right in front of us.
Bones cracked softly as fur melted into his skin. In seconds, a huge man stood exactly where the beast had been. He was at least six foot five in dark clothes, with jet-black hair falling over cold, steel eyes. He was the most striking man I had ever seen…
“Touch her” the tall man said softly. “And this entire forest becomes your permanent grave.”
Kane took a fast step back and dropped his arm, looking completely terrified. “You… you cannot do this. She is my property.”
“She is no one’s property.” The blonde wolf suddenly shifted into a man with broad shoulders, stepping forward and cracking his knuckles. “But she is definitely not yours, little boy.”
The brown wolf shifted next, a man with calm green eyes and a sharp jawline. “I suggest you leave right now before my brother rips your head off.”
Kane looked from the three men to the five whimpering wolves behind him, knowing he couldn’t win this fight.
“This is not over,” Kane spat, pointing a shaking finger at me. “You will pay for this, Maya. I promise you.”
“Leave,” the dark-haired man ordered coldly.
Kane turned and ran fast with his five wolves following close behind with their tails tucked until they disappeared into the dark trees.
The dark-haired man crouched beside me, the heat of his strong hand gently touching my cold cheek.
“You are safe now,” he whispered.
The very last thing I heard before the darkness took me away was his deep voice.
“She is mine now.”
