As I walk into the kitchen, I notice Emily and Aiden staring at me.
"Did the clothes not fit," Emily asks as she gestures to the hairbow on my side.
"Um. They were a little baggy. But it's okay. The hairbows are keeping them in place," I stand there not knowing what to do. I mean, do I sit down with them? Do I take my food and sit somewhere else?
"Well have a seat. That's your plate right there. And about the clothes, I'll take you tomorrow to get some new ones," Emily pulls out a bar stool from the island counter and pats it. I slowly walk over to the chair and sit down. I look down at the plate and see that they've overfilled the plate. It's so full I wouldn't be able to add anything else to it. I'm going to assume Emily made this plate because of what she had seen in my room.
"I'm not going to be able to eat all of this. It'll just go to waste," I run my arm with my hand while looking at the plate.
"That's okay. You can save it for tonight if you end up getting hungry. Now... Dig in," She nudges my arm.
I slowly pick up my spoon in my right hand and dip it into the corn. I add the spoon full of corn to my mashed potatoes. Don't judge me. It's really good when you do it that way. I don't think I can even eat corn unless I add it to my mashed potatoes. As soon as the first bite hits my tongue, my taste buds so haywire. It's so buttery and delicious I can stop myself from humming in satisfaction this food is bringing me.
Emily chuckles while Aiden gives a half-smile to no one in particular, "I'm guessing you like it?"
With an mmhmm, I continue eating.
"So," Emily begins, "We don't really know your name and I feel like it's kind of awkward calling you girl... So... What is your name?"
Just as she finishes, I start feeling nauseous. I drop my stoop into my plate as I scan the room for a trash can.
"It's okay. You don't have to tell me," Emily starts rushing out the words and I feel like rushing out of this room.
Trash Can!!!
I quickly get off the barstool and rush over to the trash can. I almost didn't make it but thankfully I did. As I empty all of the contents of my stomach I feel someone pull my hair back from my face. Another pair of hands start rubbing my back in a soothing motion. After the dry heaving stops, I stand up clutching my stomach, "I'm so sorry. I ruined dinner."
"No, you didn't ruin dinner. I didn't know it'd make you throw up. I'm the one who should be saying sorry," Emily continues rubbing my back while Aiden pushes my hair behind my ears.
"I think I'm going to go lay down for the night. Um... What time does my shift start?"
"Don't worry about tomorrow. Emily will take you shopping to get some casual clothes and work clothes. She'll wake you in the morning when she starts getting ready. Just go get some rest," Aiden steps away from me and grabs my plate to put in the fridge.
"Katherine," I whisper.
"What?" Aiden stops what he's doing and turns towards me.
"My name is Katherine Rains," I lie.
"Well it's nice to meet you, Kat, You already know my first name but I'm Emily Huntington. That's my brother Aiden Huntington the fourth. Yeah, I know... But we're not gonna talk about that. His Fiance is Sadie Port and our mother's name is Carla Huntington. Please. Please. PLEASE, do NOT call her anything but Miss Huntington," Emily's advice will be noted.
"Thank you, to the both of you. But... I think I'll go lay down now," Emily gives me a hug while Aiden acts like I'm not in the room. I guess he didn't like the fact that I threw up as soon as I ate that meal. Must have been a real insult to whoever made it.
When I get back to my room, I immediately crawl into bed. I need this more than anything. Even though this bed is the most comfortable thing I've laid my body on, I find it hard to sleep. As soon as I start dozing off, images of my brother finding me pop into my head. I lay there for hours before my stomach starts to growl. I guess I can go downstairs and get the leftovers from earlier. I climb out of bed and head downstairs. As I start to round the corner to the kitchen, I stop dead in my tracks when I hear Aiden and Sadie talking.
"Why do you have to be like that? Just accept the fact that we ARE getting married in four months," Sadie whines.
"Around others, I can keep up the charade that we're a happy couple and that I love you but right now? Right now, I don't have to pretend for anyone. I don't want you to touch me. Stop," I can hear a little commotion and then a loud slap. Did he just hit her? I come around the corner to see Aiden and Sadie standing there by the island counter. He doesn't move to look at me but Sadie does. Aiden's face is red on one side. Oh my gosh... She hit him... She literally HIT HIM...
"I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone would be in here. I'll grab my plate to go," I skurry to the fridge and grab my plate out. As I heat my food up in the microwave I can hear them kissing. When the timer goes off, I quickly grab my food and turn to see Aiden and Sadie hugging and kissing like they're a new couple. You know how it is when you're in a new relationship. It's like you can't keep your hands off each other.
I run up to my room as quickly as I can without spilling my plate. What the hell was that all about? If he doesn't like her then why would he marry her? She's abusive and mentally disturbed. No one deserves that. Ugh, this place will be the death of me. Actually, my eighteenth birthday will be in four days. Technically I'll be free of everything on my birthday but I will not do Aiden wrong. He was nice enough to take me in and pay for my hospital bill. I can't just run away after that. I turn the TV on as I climb into bed with my plate. Switching through the cartoon section while eating my mashed potatoes and corn. I didn't really want any of the pork or green beans. Spongebob flips across the screen.
Yay!
I love this cartoon.
Aidens' P.O.V.
I know I shouldn't go into her room in the middle of the night but I have to. I don't want Katherine to think I'm some abusive asshole. Here goes nothing. I knock on her bedroom door and wait a moment before hearing her voice.
"Come in," Her voice sounds uncertain but it didn't stop me from opening the door. I slowly walk through the door until I'm full inside. I know she can see the scratch marks from Sadie on my left cheek.
"Are you okay?" She starts to get out of bed but I hold my hand up to stop her, "Yeah I'm fine."
I turn my face away from her. I don't want her to see me like this. It's not everyday Sadie puts marks on my face.
"Look, I know you heard what happened downstairs," I confess.
"I didn't hear anything. I don't know what you're talking about," She lies.
"Don't. I know you did. You were about to come in there and kick my ass for hitting her. I didn't touch her. I'd never hit a woman for no reason," I can't help but look back to her to see what her expression is towards me. I'm shocked to see she's completely calm. Most women would fear a man who 'hits' women.
"I know," Katherine simply states before going back to eating her food.
"You know?" I know she sees the confusion all over my face as it's laced in my tone.
"I saw the red handprint on your face when I came into the kitchen. I know she hit you. Not the other way around... But that's none of my business. That's one thing my mother taught me," She slides her plate away from her as she looks up at me.
I can't help but fight back the smile that tries to spread across my face, "Your mother sounds like a smart woman."
She smiles back at me before her eyes shift to her comforter. I watch as she continues to smile at whatever thought she's having right now. I guess I should let her sleep.
"Do you want me to take your plate?" I offer as I point towards it.
"Um... Yeah if you don't mind," She reaches the plate out for me to take. As I take the plate out of her hand she says, "Thank you."
"It's no problem. I'm going that way anyway," I turn and leave the room just as quickly as I can get that sentence out.
Emily's' P.O.V.
Morning comes earlier than I thought it would. I need to wake Kat up so she can take a shower before breakfast.
"I didn't realize it'd be this hard to get you up," I laugh.
I watch as she rubs the sleep away from her eyes, "Normally I'm not. I couldn't really sleep last night."
"Well today is a new day so get your butt out of bed and take a shower," I throw some clothes at her, hitting her in the head with the soft fabrics. This must be what it's like to have a sister.
"Oh, and we're having pancakes this morning so come on down when you're ready."
____
I knock on the door of Aidens' office in hopes he's alone in there. I really do NOT want to deal with that Witch this morning.
"Come in," I hear him from the other side. I poke my head in to make sure the coast is clear, "Thank gosh she's not here," I enter to room fully. Aiden puts down his papers to give me his full attention.
"What's up?"
"I need you to make pancakes this morning," I sit down on the sofa by the window.
"I don't have time for this right now, Emily. I have to get caught up on all of the paperwork I missed yesterday," Aiden gives me a knowing look and I know it's my fault he missed his deadlines.
"Well, I already told Kat we were having pancakes and you know I hate the way the chefs make it so..."
Here he goes again, rubbing his face like I'm the one stressing him out, "Please Aiden. I'll leave you alone for the rest of the day if you'll just make me and Katherine some pancakes this morning... Two days?... Three?... Okay, I'll leave you alone for a week if you'll just do this one little favor for me," I can see he's starting to give up.
"You and I both know no matter how much you try, you'll never fully leave me alone," I know he's right but I'm not going to admit that right now when I'm trying to get my way, "Okay. I'll make pancakes but, " Aiden gets up from his desk, "You better leave me to my work for a week. I'll need all the time I can get to finish this. You've really set me back so much right now I'm starting to get stressed."
"Is there ever a time that you're not stressed?" I nudge him as we walk out of the office. He lightly pushes me as we laugh about it. He knows I'm right. Sadie goes on all of these vacations and shopping sprees, pretty much using my brother for her lifestyle. She never lets him do anything he wants. I remember before Sadie became his Fiance, we would always go on vacations together. At least once a month we'd go out for a family dinner and every summer he'd take off from work to go to the beach. It was such a great time. Of course, Sadie and Clara had to ruin it. Mom thought Aiden needed to hurry up and get married because she wants someone to take over the company. You know what that means... Babies with someone you don't even love. They think Aiden will come around to it and love her just as much as she loves his money. I don't think it's going to happen. Aiden knows how much I hate her and hate the idea of her becoming a part of this family. He's actually on board with me on this one but there's nothing he can do to change our mothers mind. I've tried to set him up with so many different women but it's hard to find someone who isn't a golddigger. Aiden is worldwide known for his money and looks. Every girl jumps at the thought of having a rich man by there side. Just when I thought I wouldn't run into Sadie this morning, here she comes...
"Hey, babe. I thought you were going to get an early start in your office," She kisses him on the cheek.
"I just came out of there. I just wanted to go downstairs and get something to eat," Aiden sounds a little annoyed but Sadie doesn't notice. She never does. Now, when Aiden says anything wrong in front of people she'll put him in his place when they're alone. Other than that, she doesn't care about his feelings. That just shows she really doesn't care about him.
"Oh, you could have called the maids to bring you something. Go back to the office and I'll tell one of them to bring you something up," Sadie sounds like she's being a thoughtful, caring lady but we all know she just wants Aiden to go back to work.
"Actually, Aiden is going to make us pancakes this morning so... Yeah," I say as I loop my arm around his.
"Oh, so when you say us, you mean just you and him?" I can tell Sadie wants to know if Katherine is joining us.
"No. It'll be me, Aiden, and Katherine," I smile at her knowing it'll only piss her off even more.
"Ohhh. Well, I would hope this isn't a closed event because I'd love to join you guys."
"Babe, not trying to be rude but I thought you were on a diet?" Aidens' so confused right now.
He just doesn't understand why Sadie would join us after saying she's dieting and WILL NOT eat with us anymore. I know the reason behind this. She doesn't want Aiden around any woman without her being there. She feels threatened by every woman, single or married because she knows how Aiden feels about her. She doesn't want him to find someone and leave her. He has a real shot at love and she's just in the way.
The door opens to Katherines' room and Clara emerges from behind the door.
What the hell...
