"Thank you so much. I promise to work hard." I bowed to the owner of the bar whom I was going to start working for.
This wasn't the job I left my house for as I didn't get the job but on my way back home, I saw a hiring sign and I decided to try my luck. I should add this to the days I'm grateful for taking the long way home.
"You can start weekend, if it's okay by you," He rubbed his forehead, "I still need to get a few things in place and order a lot of things. So you have three days to get ready."
"It's fine sir. Thank you so much." I bowed again.
I exited the bar with a bounce in my step as I couldn't wait to tell the guys I found a job. My happiness was reaching the sky and passersby could sense it, one would think I'd won the lottery.
And they said I wouldn't find one. Ha! In their faces.
While I was still lost in my thoughts of how I should have placed a bet on it, my phone rang and I fished it out of my bag just to see the ID of the i***t I was just thinking about.
"I got the job!" I screamed into the receiver.
"You what?" Junior shouted back and I laughed.
"I said I got the job. Not the job I went for but I got one anyways." I looked left and right before crossing the road.
"That's awesome. How much is the pay?"
"N15000 per month, just for being a waitress."
"Nice. So where are you right now?"
"Adeniran Ogunsanya. I'm heading to the bank. Oh, my new workplace is here too, meaning it's closer to the house in a way..."
"Dee, there are like 5 banks there." He interrupted me. "Be specific."
"Oh sorry, I'm in front of GT Bank." I laughed. I totally forgot that this street is like a business place with malls and banks and clubs around.
"Okay, Andrew and I will be there in a few." He said and hung up.
I stepped into the bank to pay for my electricity bills and withdraw the last cash in my account. If not for this job, I think I'm going to starve and Alhaji would end up getting his way. The thought of it made me hot despite the multiple ACs in this place.
Junior and Andrew arrived immediately I stepped out of the bank and they waved me over. I quickly got into the car and pecked both of them on their cheek.
"What's up?"
"Someone's over joyous today." Andrew muttered, eyeing me while rubbing his cheek and I pinched it.
"Why wouldn't I be? The sky is blue, the air is clear, just enough sunshine..." I started before Junior cut me off.
"She got a job, don't mind her."
"Party pooper." I sat back and folded my arms across my chest. "Where did you guys go to?"
"We went to see Al-"
"Alfred, our friend from class." Junior cut him off. "The dude is already on his way back to school."
"Aww, now I'm reminded that you guys are going back in two weeks." I pouted.
"It's a good thing for now. We can hang out a lot, more like everyday." Andrew smiled at me.
We drove in silence back to my place and once we arrived, I couldn't help but ask whether they tidied up. Despite them saying they did, I didn't want to believe until I've seen it myself.
Don't get me wrong, when it came to other things, I can believe but not when it comes to cleaning.
"Okay, you guys actually tidied up. Nice." I smiled when I saw no traces of empty bottles or the flowers Alhaji brought the night before.
"We told you!" Andrew sighed dramatically.
"Whatever. I'm hungry, cook for me." I gave them my pity face and they groaned.
"Stop that. We're not cooking, do it yourself." Junior turned me around so he wouldn't have to see my face any longer.
"But I left early. I was walking under the sun for so long..."
"Didn't you compliment on the weather earlier?" Andrew cut me off and I grinned.
"Fine, I'll cook. Just because I love you." He said and walked into the kitchen leaving me and Junior alone.
"So tell me more about this 'job' you found," Junior sat on the couch and patted the space beside him and I dropped beside him.
"Well, the job I was going for this morning didn't hire me and I was planning on taking shortcut back home because I wasn't expecting you guys to have gone anywhere but I remembered I needed to pay the bills so I took a detour."
"Then...?"
"So I passed this building and there was a hiring sign in front of it and I felt it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. So I entered and I saw this man and I told him I was here for the job. He hired me on the spot."
"Without asking you whether you had experience or other questions?"
"Yup."
"And it's not suspicious?"
"Argh Junior. Don't make me rethink my employment." I slapped his chest and he laughed.
"I'm actually on his side on this one. What if he kept the sign there to lure innocent people in and kill them?" Andrew said while walking out of the kitchen with an apron around his waist.
We started laughing.
"Dude, just because I compliment you on your cooking doesn't mean you should take it to another level." Junior said in between laughs while I was still trying to catch my breath.
"Hush." He laughed and sat beside me.
"I don't think so. Besides, the man just opened it. It's like a restaurant and a bar together. I was the first to apply. And if it's to kill me, I wouldn't be here."
"So you're going to work tomorrow?" Andrew asked.
"Nah, he said I can start Saturday. He needs to put things in place."
"Well, at least Dee would be busy instead of sitting at home all day. And you have money to fend for yourself." Junior patted my cheeks and I huffed.
"Yeah, but there wouldn't be anyone here late at night. Besides, 15 thousand isn't going to give me 200 thousand by the end of 6 months."
"Why don't you rent out the spare rooms then?" Andrew voiced out after a brief silence and with the way I turned to look at him, I'm surprised I didn't get a whiplash or break my neck.
"Andrew, you're a fvcking genius." Junior and I said together. "Jinx!"
"So I've been told."
"Shut up and don't ruin the moment." I rolled my eyes.
"Well, it solves the loneliness at night" Junior muttered.
"I know right. I have to clean the rooms though, maybe get new paint. OMG, I'm going to spend money on all those..."
"Hey, chill. You forgot you have two handsome men at your disposal." Junior flexed his biceps and Andrew struck a funny pose, making me laugh.
"Painting isn't a big deal. We'll deal with it on our own. Besides, the three of us painting is going to be totally fun." Andrew continued.
"I love you guys," I sniffed and pulled them in for a hug. We were like that for a while before my nose decided to pick up a burning smell.
"Uhm Andy, what happened to your cooking?"
He pulled away and ran to the kitchen screaming about his art getting destroyed.
"Is it okay renting out your parents room to a stranger?" Junior looked at me with concern and I sighed.
"I guess I'll have to move into that room then. Besides, it wouldn't be fair if a tenant is having a bigger room than the other."
"So we should start the day after tomorrow, right?"
"Okay." He smiled at me and opened his mouth to say something but Andrew walked in, announcing that his work didn't get burned.
"So lady and i***t, food is served." He bowed.
"That quick?" I raised a brow at him.
"It's noodles, b***h. Now come eat before it gets cold." And we laughed again.
